Rand,

Our parish is looking to replace our music issues. Is there something other than OCP available?

Ooooh, yes! My highest recommendation is for the Adoremus Hymnal, which is published by Ignatius Press. These are hardbound hymnals with an emphasis on orthodoxy and singability. Therefore, there are no contemporary hymns with unsingable metres and questionable theology. Also, no inclusive language – God is still our Father. The hymns have the original texts, and they also offer a wide variety of Mass settings in Latin and in English.

There are other hymnals out there as well, including the St. Michael’s Hymnal, which I am not overly familiar with, but seems to be growing in popularity. Also, the Westminster Hymnal is a good one, but it is printed in the frustrating British style of having the music on top of the page and the words on bottom.

Aside from OCP, another major publisher is GIA, which may have recently purchased by OCP (I’m not certain of this). Quite politically correct, but more organ oriented with musical arrangements far superior to those of OCP. They feature the Gelineau psalm tones and much more traditional music than OCP. Also are the publications of J. S. Paluch, such as “We Celebrate,” which had a fair number of more traditional hymns, but recently took a turn toward political correctness and inclusive language. The Collegeville Hymnal has some good music in it, but the organ books and missalettes (Celebrating the Eucharist) are very confusing and have awful psalm tones.

Good luck when you call OCP to cancel your subscription. They DO NOT like to lose a customer.

The Gather hymnal, published by GIA does have a decent selection of traditional hymns, but it also has an equally irritating smattering if silly stuff as well. For those who like more traditional music, Adoremus Hymnal is probably the best. There’s also an Anglican Use Catholic church near where I live that uses an Anglican hymnal that isn’t bad either.

Pax vobiscum!

I am fortunate to be able to attend a traditional NO Mass on Sundays. The propers and ordinaries are done in Gregorian chant. This is the choir that sings every week:

I thought most of our members would enjoy listening to some of this.

That was neat! Thanks! 🙂

I know my question was off topic but thanks to all who answered. I just bought an Adoremus Hymnal. Its 2 weeks back ordered but I’ll be here before the next Liturgy meeting.

And yes, Rand I listened to the links you provided. They were great.

Cavaille-Coll,

The St. Michael Hymnal is a good one, from what I’ve seen. My cousins’ parish uses it and I looked through it while I was there last time. It is very similar to the Adoremus Hymnal, with the order of the Mass in both Latin and English and then traditional hymns.

In Christ,
Rand

NOT ONLY does the Adoremus Hymnal have the ordinary in Latin and English - IT HAS THE RUBRICS. You can show the priest that the sign of peace is OPTIONAL!!! Please God, the SOP will be consigned to optional oblivion since it has rarely, if ever, worked as planned.
