Music changes with new translation

Effective Advent 2011. Where did the time go?.
I’m leading the music at an early morning mass in my parish. Just got notice of a ‘mandatory’ workshop next week.

I’m in need of a new Gloria after advent and new memorial acclamations settings sooner. I’m not crazy about some of the rewrites I’ve heard for the Gloria; and I’d like the congregation to sing along.

We chant the Kyrie, Sanctus and Agnus Dei, (which wont change in translation).

I haven’t posted for a long time, but I know you guys are always full of ideas.

The Gloria from the Mass of the Angels is pretty easy to chant until you learn more. It’s easy for the congregation to pick up on the melody, and the Latin flows quite nicely. No awkward "We adore you silence “we glorify you” stop etc.

Why not try tt are found in the ICEL default chants that are found in the Roman Missal? You can go to the USCCB website and click on Roman Missal formation. They have the ICEL chants up and they are easy.

The Gloria is straight-through and the Sanctus is quite simple, as are the Memorial Acclamations.

Thanks, benedictgal. I found it and printed it:thumbsup:. I also found the Latin Gloria from the mass of angels in the Adoremus hymnal. I think learning the Latin will be the bigger challenge and cause more culture shock. Thanks for your speedy responses.

I’m sure they’ll have good ideas at your workshop. My fiancee is a music minister and they haven’t decided what settings to use yet either. He thinks he’d going to go with something completely new, so the folks won’t confuse the new stuff with the old. I’m intersted to see what they come up with. By the way, the text for the Sanctus is changing as well. (though not much.)

Not really. It’s just one of those things the more you hear it, the easier it is to pick it up. When I went to my first EF Mass, I was amazed by how much Latin I already knew without ever being taught any. I just sort of absorbed it whenever I heard it. Every Catholic should know the Latin responses and Latin versions of the liturgical music anyway, according to Rome.
