People don’t sing chant…I try…they don’t … and for the record, it is NOT easy to follow.

I WANT to compose. I have a gift. I feel the Holy Spirit calling me to do so. Whether it is used for Mass is up to God, but to say that I am not able to write for Mass just because I live today and not in the classical era is unfortunate and stifling. (not saying you said it, but the implication is there).

Then go ahead and write. If it is meant to be, then God’s will will find a place for it. The age you live in doesn’t matter. Sometimes the musical compromises you must make to stay in line with the guidelines are tough, but that is part of the challenge and tapping into that gift…Fear not, even the attempt is worthwhile.

For an alternative view I offer my church, where our Latin Novus Ordo Mass with Gregorian Ordinary and Propers is the loudest Mass of the weekend. The people sing the roof off, and they’re not trained musicians but just plain folk.
