I have a question about music options for mass. Specifically in a traditional Latin/Tridentine mass wedding is the music composed for mass in the classical era allowed to be used for the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei. (My girlfriend and I really love Mozart’s Missa Brevis No. 10 in C major)

Dear friends :),

I am filled with joy at learning that you wish to be married in the love of Christ. This is a great sign of hope: when even one couple tie their flesh into one body inside the Body of Christ. Excellent!

Now, when considering matrimonial music, it’s of primary importance to assess the local cathedral or church choir. Does Mozart’s 10th Mass setting require any Soprano, Alto, Tenor, or Bass soloist(s)? Would you be able to hire an orchestra for the quire? Is there a good organ or keyboard arrangement you can find, assuming you have an organist or at least a pianist? Does this Mass require timpani? 😉 Church logistics are in play at all times.

Due to simplification of the liturgy and its music starting in 1903 with St. Pius X’s encyclical on music (and various Vatican II developments), it may not be in the general atmosphere to use such a bright and brilliant Mass setting as a Mozart C major. If you can find some director, orchestra, organist, and pastor who will support this, though, it’s fine! You can use any Mass setting, really… 🙂

Thank you :). yeah, I realize there’s a lot of logistics that we would need to work through, but I wanted to make sure it was acceptable before I perused all of the different facets.

Thanks again
