How can there be music in heaven, if heaven is in eternity, and music requires temporal progression?

I think that there will be time in Heaven. We will feel it passing, but since there is no end to our existence in Heaven it will be meaningless as there are no endings.

Why?

Because of the bodily resurrection. Matter and time are intrinsically linked. In order for time to exist, there must be physical matter. In order for matter to exist, there has to be time so atoms can do all their little atom-y things. We will be resurrected in our bodies, eat, drink, walk, etc. Therefore it seems to me that time will exist in a logical progression much the way it does now. It’s just, when there is no end, things like days and weeks and months are rather meaningless. Kind of like summer break when you’re a kid. It just won’t matter. But it will enable things like music, communication, and creation to happen (I like to believe we can craft in Heaven, too!) ETA: Oh! And learn! I want to study and learn in Heaven, too! 🙂

The seraphim repeat the Sanctus for eternity. The voice of the angels should suffice.

there are choruses of Angels forever singing

Holy Holy Holy

Whilst choral music is wonderful…I think that our own music tastes will be what we will enjoy the majority of the time.

I mean I love a good hymn but I would get a bit bored of it after a while. Jesus knows this. He is cool with it.

I am sure if one would ask God for music, other then the Angels singing, He would provide it.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has made everything suitable for its time; moreover he has put a sense of past and future into their minds, yet they cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.

Sirach 42:21 He has set in order the splendors of his wisdom; he is from all eternity one and the same. Nothing can be added or taken away, and he needs no one to be his counselor.

Isaiah 30:29 You shall have a song as in the night when a holy festival is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one sets out to the sound of the flute to go to the mountain of the Lord, to the Rock of Israel.

Luke1:37 For nothing will be impossible with God.”

You guys make it sound like an old people’s home. You’ll be wondering about the food next.

We don’t really know what eternity entails, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Perhaps eternity for us does not necessarily exclude the perception of time for us (given that we are temporal creatures by nature), but it may also mean that we’re not as trapped by time as we are here on this plane. So perhaps we may be able to tap into every moment ever, or perhaps it’s just a neverending perception of happiness while still perceiving that as change.

After all, creation itself is an eternal act (because God IS immutable and outside of time), but that eternal act translates to us as time. And the unchanging God is still perceived in creation as “moving” among us. So eternity and a perception of time and change may not necessarily be mutually exclusive.

We just don’t know, and won’t know until we actually enter eternity.

Great question! So, I’m a fan of science and science fiction. I wonder if Eternity will be beyond time, rather than an absence of it. I mean, no time, no movement. But isn’t God the unmoved mover?

I like how C.S. Lewis described it. Time must be like a book on a table. God is like a person standing at the table and outside the book. At any moment in his time he can reach out and touch the book and enter our time and effect our lives.

So, just as the depth of three dimensions (height, depth and width) are different and more than the flatness of two dimensions (height and width), the time of Eternity must be different and more than our time. Insofar as time is the fourth dimension, Eternity might be something like a fifth dimension, rather than merely three dimensions absent of time.

But I imagine experiencing music in such a fifth dimension might be quite different and likely more beautiful than what we’re used to!

Make sense?

This is getting really philosophical, but DOES music require temporal progression. There are many musicians that have experimented with trying to extract the time from music. The problem is, how do you know when the music is over? But in eternity, it doesn’t matter!

Guardian angels say there are no diets in heaven as long as you sing the music with gusto .

My personal philosophy is that God, the Father, reacts to any of our music like I do over anything my little baby does. He can’t make words, and he uses the one he does know (mama) wrong, but every time I hear it my heart completely melts and I celebrate it like he just graduated Harvard. I think God will celebrate over rap as much as antiphons. 🙂

Now if there was black pudding with that, it would be heavenly.
