Music in Mass

I’ve just recently returned to the Church. One of my reasons for doing so was that Catholicism has such a high concept of the Eucharist. The theology surrounding the Mass is so beautiful, unfortunately, I’m finding myself longing for different music.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a fan of some great Catholic hymns like “Here I am Lord” and “On Eagle’s Wings”. However, much of the more modern hymns they use are not so potent. Sometimes I feel like, musically and even aesthetically speaking, I could very well just be standing in a Lutheran or Anglican church.

I love Gregorian Chant…if holiness were a sound…

Does anyone feel that we need to return to more distinctly Catholic music?

Yes. Many, many people feel this way. Scholas and “traditional” choirs are starting up in large numbers. We are at the dawn of a new and better era regarding sacred music and liturgy in general. Check out, for example, the New Liturgical Movement

As the others have mentioned, I’m meeting and knowing more and more people who are expressing the same things regarding the state of music today. My friend just started a men’s schola for Gregorian chant and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that it will take wing.
