Music in our churches

I recently went to church with some relatives who are catholic, and their music was led in a praise and worship style that is typical of Chrsitian music that we hear on the radio. That style is very prominent in protestant circles, but I have never heard of it being used in the catholic church. Does the catholic church have an aversion to that music based on style preference, tradition, or thinking that it is wrong to do so in church? If there are any other reasons please say so. Thanks.
 
While the Church allows latitude on these questions, she makes it clear that the preference is for reverence in music. The pope and the catechism clearly state that the first option should always be Gregorian chant.

The question is where is the line between prayer and spectacle. The Church wants no undue attention paid to performers or performances within the liturgy. The place for these things is in a concert setting or a praise and worship session.
 
This is a big topic of debate here - check out the Liturgy and Sacraments forum and you’ll find many threads. The official position is just what sterryfamily states. The reality in the US, especially in certain geographical areas (like my own), is that Protestant-style “praise and worship” music is very common and popular. I personally cannot stand that kind of music; I think church should be solemn and reverent, and if I want folk, pop or rock music I’ll listen to a CD or go to a club. When I began attending Catholic churches I was dismayed to discover that I had to search for a parish with music I could stand.
 
i’ve heard precious little good quality music in Catholic parishes. mostly i think the protestants are a lot better at music than we are. they also are much better at preaching, as a general rule Catholic priests aren’t very good preachers.

but i think there are systemic reasons for this. the focal point of Catholics worship is the Eucharist, not music or preaching. music and preaching are fine, but they are inherently human activities whichmeans they are invested with ego, showmanship. in protestant churches they have to find attractive things to do during their services, seeing as they have no Eucharist, i mean if you’ve got the Eucharist, everhthing else just pales by comparison. But without it, then you need a show.

people go to Mass for the Eucharist, and i think most people are generally annoyed by attempts to get everybody handclapping or handholding. music at Mass should be simple, easy to sing, and if that can’t be done, then there should be no music at all. I personallly prefer there be no music.

There are a few Roman Catholic Churches in our area that have started to do this as well. The Priests are younger and if you didn’t know any better you would almost think you were in a Protestant church. Their style of preaching is also mimicking more of the Evangelicals as well. But it seems to be working as they are reaching many young adults.

Just my 1.5 cents.

Yup i always believe God 's plan will change accordingly to circumstances…that’s why i prefer to attend a charismatic catholic service then a tradition mass
