What kind of music does your church/temple/synagogue use?
What music do you prefer?

For Christians - What is your favorite song?

Our Parish uses a "traditional"Hymnal and a lady playes them beautifully on the organ. My personal favorite Liturgical song is Humbly let us voice our Homage for the Euchrist. For private(home, car etc.)I love Unwavering by Matt Maher and Holy,Holy,Holy by Teresa Smith of Crossed Hearts.

Mostly CCM with the occasional Hymn, Southern Gospel and Urban Gospel selection added. Depending upon the week’s praise leader we can be heavy on Chris Tomlin, Lincoln Brewster or Israel Houghton during the last 4 years or so. This is My Desire (Lord I Give You My Heart) was the first song I arranged for the team. And I found out later that it was my wife’s favorite “gospel song” in a CCM version, the year before we met. I always say my favorite is what I hear in my head at that particular moment.

Only melody written in the hymnbook so it’s impossible for most in the congregation to sing any harmony, tunes and lyrics banal, rhythms too complex; but the guitarist who is our only accompaniment seems to like it, and we sing out even when it sounds like we’re on different songs. Which, BTW just happened last night after the Pastor complimented us and some people applauded themselves:eek: I laughed on the inside.🙂

Sorry I’m negative about this but my other experience is from a Baptist church where the congregation would have revolted if someone brought a guitar, for Sunday AM service we had an organist, and if you asked any member if they sang SAT or B they could have told you. 🤷

As a former Anglo Catholic my favorites are Once in Royal David’s City, which was sung while our priest processed with the Infant Jesus to the Nativity scene.

I also love The Strife is O’re the Battle Done, sung during Easter.

Holy God We Praise Thy Name

O Saving Victim (in a different melody and in English)

Ave Maria by Shubert

Panis Angelicus

There are many traditional hymns that I like. Thank God our parish uses a traditional hymnal, so I get to hear and sing some of my favorites.

Yours in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary

Bernadette

I like a varied amount of Christian worship songs, but my all time favourite is ‘how great thou art’, nothing gets the blood pumping and the passion flowing for me than that song.

We have two Sunday services: “traditional” that follows the Methodist liturgy and uses the UMC hymnal. “Contemporary” that uses no liturgy and plays only praise/worship songs by Chris Tomlin, Caedmons Call, etc.
I prefer the hymnal because praise and worship music is dreadful. They are generally poorly written and the theology is very questionable.
Give me those great, old hymns:)

My parish seems to be relatively conservative as far as N.O. parishes go, only piano or organ and a choir, no guitar or anything like that. I still would rather it be only the choir, and sometimes it is (when the organist is sick or there is some other reason to not have accompaniment).

As far as hymnody goes, I greatly enjoy Znamenny chant of the Russian Orthodox tradition. It’s very beautiful. For distinctly Eastern Catholic music, Maronite chant is always very moving. It is a most humbling and wonderous thing to hear the eucharistic chant in Aramaic.

Catholics aren’t know for really belting out the tunes. 🙂

Do you really think that the lyrics are banal, though?

Since a year ago I like listening Gregorians’ Chant and Salve Regina is my favorite one.

The Arabic recension of Byzantine chant, adapated to English texts.

I once read that the unofficial motto of the Catholic Church is, “I can sing more softly than you can”😉

Really only a small part of the lyrics are “bad” but the melodies are awful, also to clarify my statement about the tunes; I use banal in the sense of trite, not lacking originality which we have plenty of in our hymnal.
I also have to say sorry for my ranting post I started typing and it just all came out. I felt bad about that post all night.:o

What kind of music does your church/temple/synagogue use?
We are pretty traditional, using liturgy and hymns from the Lutheran Book of Worship.
What music do you prefer?
Plainsong, Bach chorales, lots of Baroque stuff. Russian Orthodox chant is outstanding.
Then there are some of the old Scandinavian melodies and English hymns. I don’t know quite where to stop except that I do not care for anything that includes massive amplifiers blasting at high volume.
For Christians - What is your favorite song?
I feel like a kid in a candy store – so many choices.😃 And, so, I won’t limit myself to one. As a Lutheran, I feel obligated to include Luther’s A Mighty Fortress. I would also include his Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word. Then there is the magnificent version of Nun Danket Alle Gott from Bach’s Cantata No. 79.

I’ll stop here, but I haven’t even scratched the surface.

My church uses mostly Russian, other Slavic and sometimes Byzantine melodies in its chanting. My favorite hymn would have to be “O Gladsome Light” which is sung at Vespers.

In Christ,
Andrew

While not my #1 favorite, its up there. 👍

At my parish we sing hymns… and there’s a choir and a piano.

There’s another parish I really want to visit, they have an organ and do more traditional music 🙂

When I go to Latin Mass, there’s Gregorian chant. I really like it 🙂

I guess I like it more traditional… but at home and in the car I sometimes listen to praise and worship just for fun 🙂

God bless
