Music known through copyright and sharing

(Please note I am scrupulous, again sorry for posting too much.)

I used to listen to music on YouTube and it may have been illegal. After I discovered this, I bought all the music (some of it) from iTunes or the nuns and now I have it in my iTunes. But, because I discovered it through the copyright infringing videos, would it be sinful for me to listen to it because I am enjoying the result of someone’s sin? I bought the music from the nuns by clicking on a link that was on the video that may have been copyright infringement.

And someone bought me a music CD for Christmas, so I put it in my iTunes. But, because iTunes has home sharing (or maybe they downloaded it onto their computer) they also have it in their iTunes. We live in the same house so the homesharing of iTunes is okay (I think), but would it be a sin for me to listen to the music from the CD?

One thing is to be illegal, other thing is to be immoral or unethical.

I listen to music on YouTube, have never got a definitive answer of the legality of it, and the ethics of it. I can not help but think if it was illegal, then why is the music not been removed? Until I get a definitive answer on the legality, preferably from YouTube themselves, and the moral and ethics aspect from Church leaders that denounces it, then I am probably not going to stop listening to music. I am though trying to buy the music that I listen too frequently

Musicians and their…(whatever) also upload their videos on YouTube or embed their YouTube videos on their websites. YouTube would normally take down copyright infringed videos from their platform.

There are equally other sites that host online videos. Whether some of these sites are legal or not is hard to tell.

A video with a link to where you can buy it speaks volumes.

No it is not sinful for you to listen to the music you have purchased.

And please get help from your priest for your srupulosity. You need to be under regular guidance and care. The internet is not going to help you to get a hold of this problem.

Well because there are millions of people posting things and not nearly as many You Tube employees removing things. You Tube does make an honest effort to remove things that are reported to it, and we all have responsibility for reporting illegal uploads.

Until I get a definitive answer on the legality, preferably from YouTube themselves, and the moral and ethics aspect from Church leaders that denounces it, then I am probably not going to stop listening to music. I am though trying to buy the music that I listen too frequently

You Tube clearly states copyright protected items may not be uploaded. The Church already has a commandment against stealing. So, what more do you want?

Frequently underneath the video there is the official name of the song and a link to itunes or emusic to purchase song. YouTube must create that automatically for video. Why would they do that if uploading songs was illegal?

Thanks for the answers. I thought it was sinful because I read it was participating in the sins of others to enjoy the result of their sin. Maybe I am just taking it too far…

Being scrupulous is good. You mention nuns but it is unclear what you mean. Did you buy music from some nuns? Otherwise, please talk to a priest - a real human being.

Yes, I got some of the music from nuns but I first heard it at YouTube. I forgot to mention that some of the videos were taken down by the poster (I think). They were all from the same person and he/she just suddenly took them down so I worried that maybe it was because they were illegal and she found out or something.

Being scrupulous is not good. Just look at the Old Catholic Encyclopedia entry on scruples:

Scruple

It is defined as:

An unfounded apprehension and consequently unwarranted fear that something is a sin which, as a matter of fact, is not. It is not considered here so much as an isolated act, but rather as an habitual state of mind known to directors of souls as a “scrupulous conscience.”

Talking to a priest is good advice.
