Sunday, August 18, 2013 - Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year C

Processional Hymn: #844 - “Invitatory: Psalm 95” Joncas
Preparation of the Gifts: #552 - “Sing Out, Earth and Skies” Haugen
Communion Hymn: #444 - “We Will Rise Again” Haas
Recessional Hymn: #563 - “Sing a New Song” Schutte

Here’s what was done for the Assumption:

Thursday, August 15, 2013 - The Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary - Year C

Processional Hymn: #708 - “Sing of Mary” PLEADING SAVIOR
Preparation of the Gifts: #832 - “Luke 1: My Soul Rejoices” Alstott
Communion Hymn: #434 - “On Eagle’s Wings” Joncas
Recessional Hymn: #203 - “Hail, Holy Queen” SALVE REGINA COELITUM

I don’t know why my music director decided to go with “On Eagle’s Wings”. It doesn’t really fit in for today’s solemnity, in my opinion.

Been a while, but this weekend was interesting. With the request for prayer by Pope Francis, this is what I used.

We Gather Together
Make Me a Channel of Your Peace
Dona Nobis Pacem
We Come to Your Feast
Sing of Mary
Let There be Peace on Earth

Sunday, September 8, 2013 - Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year C

Processional Hymn: #727 - “Glory in the Cross” Schutte
Preparation of the Gifts: #643 - “This Is My Song” FINLANDIA
Communion Hymn: #622 - “The Cry of the Poor” Foley
Recessional Hymn: #707 - “O Sanctissima” O DU FRÖHLICHE

We did “This Is My Song” for the anniversary of 9/11 on Wednesday, and we did “O Sanctissima” because today, September 8, is the Blessed Mother’s birthday.

Welcome to Part IV of the music leaders’ thread. Below is the little blurb CatholicZ09 put at the beginning of Part III. Happy posting!
  1. The previous thread has been able to last for over a year. That is so because of the cooperation of the posters. Any arguments or off-topic posts puts us in the risk of getting the thread closed.
  2. EVERYBODY HAS AN OPINION! Just because you do not agree with what someone has to say, you do not have to argue it out over this thread and ruin everybody else’s time on here. IF YOU CHOOSE TO ARGUE WITH SOMEONE REGARDING ANY TOPIC AND/OR POST IN THIS THREAD, PLEASE PRIVATE MESSAGE THEM! It gets to the point of being selfish when two or more people argue about something and the thread gets closed and nobody else can post anymore.
  3. Finally and practically restating #2, please respect everyone that posts here. If you disagree with something they pick, something they suggest, something they bring up in this thread, that does not mean to argue about it till kingdom come. Again, senseless arguments put the thread in jeopardy. Please private message someone if you wish to argue.

I’m bringing this thread back from the dead!

This is what we did today:

Sunday, January 5, 2014 - The Epiphany of the Lord - Year A

Processional Hymn: #109 - “As with Gladness Men of Old” DIX
Preparation of the Gifts: #105 - “We Three Kings” KINGS OF ORIENT
Communion Hymn: #104 - “The First Nowell” THE FIRST NOWELL
Recessional Hymn: #110 - “Songs of Thankfulness and Praise” SALZBURG

Next weekend"

Sunday, January 12, 2014 - The Baptism of the Lord - Year A

Processional Hymn: #112 - “When Jesus Comes to be Baptized” OLD HUNDREDTH
Preparation of the Gifts: #107 - “What Child Is This” GREENSLEEVES
Communion Hymn: #86 - “Of the Father’s Love Begotten” DIVINUM MYSTERIUM
Recessional Hymn: #80 - “Joy to the World” ANTIOCH

I am still scratching my head on Baptism of the Lord. I am working all weekend so Epiphany is moot to me. I will probably throw in “Come to the Water.”

I caved on a few things. Mostly because this congregations repertoire is quite limited (and I don’t have my music list from three years ago).

Baptism of the Lord:

Gathering: On Jordan’s Bank
Preparation: Baptized in Water
Communion: Come to the Water & One Bread, On Body
Closing: Praise to You O CHrist Our Savior

Mass Setting: Mass of Renewal (ILP)

Now that Christmas is over, I can start to plan for my favorite, Easter!

I have the same issue. I too took a safe route and used
JOSHUA Chapter 1:9
I command you: be strong and steadfast! Do not fear nor be dismayed,…

Discerning the charisms already present may lead you in a different direction or speed your transition. Who knows maybe you’ll identify a spiritual need that can be served by the music you select or encourage everyone to join in the praise. Perhaps it is better to first express some of the majesty and awe…

:harp:

O LORD, our Lord, how awesome is your name through all the earth!
I will sing of your majesty above the heavens with the mouths of babes…

For this weekend:

Sunday, January 19, 2014 - Second Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A

Processional Hymn: #194 - “Praise to the Lord” LOBE DEN HERREN
Preparation of the Gifts: #469 - “All Is Well with My Soul” VILLE DU HAVRE
Communion Hymn: #331 - “Taste and See” Moore
Recessional Hymn: #417 - “Church of God, Elect and Glorious” HYFRYDOL

I have to say that I will miss the Christmas hymns!

One of my hard fast rules is to never use music that is unknown for a one shot occasion. As my goal is to support singing, I use familiar music and only incorporate new music at the rate of no more that five a year.

I love this thread!

Keep 'em coming! :D:thumbsup:

Oh, no… don’t do that… If you can sing and play music then just inflict your personal favourites on the congregation. They come to Mass to hear you perform! :D:rolleyes:

I’m thinking I may have to follow that same rule for a while at least. This parish is about 6x larger than my previous parish, so I don’t have quite the freedom I used to.

As it is, the first ‘new music’ I introduced was the Mass of Renewal (part of five settings the Diocese wants everyone to learn). There was kicking and screaming from a few, which I expected. The only pro/con response I received (outside of my choir) was “it’s good that we are learning new music so we aren’t singing the same songs all the time, but I absolutely HATE this Mass setting. No one is singing it” (at the last Music/Worship meeting before Christmas).

Which brings up a question. What settings are you all using now that we are two years into the new translation?

I cantored at a number of parishes within the last few weeks and I find that some parishes have switched to doing the English chant version of the Roman Missal. These are places that I would have never expected. Many others have taken the revised versions of the Heritage Mass and Mass of Creation. All of the musicians I knew were actually keeping their fingers crossed that MofC would fall to the way-side once the new translations came out, but it didn’t. The other mass that is really popular in another diocese I frequent is the revised Mass of Christ the Savior. I’m not a fan of it, although it did sound nice the one time I did it with string quartet.

Forgot to add that they are also doing the revised Community Mass and most of the German Mass, with the exception of the Lamb of God. Once it was set to the proper text, it’s just a bit awkward. As much as I like the melody of the Lamb of God, it doesn’t really translate well with the appropriate text.

We transition slow. We just went to Mass of Creation, which wasn’t as much of a change. Seasonally, we use Jubilate Dei in English or Latin, which really didn’t change much at all.

Back in 2011 we learned Mass of Christ the Savior by Dan Schutte and used that for quite a while. Then we learned the revised Heritage Mass. Those are currently the only two Mass settings that we know. The committee wanted to try and learn the new Mass of Creation, but a lot of us believe it’s an ugly revision (not that the original composition was any different.) 😉

My music director hates chant, so the Roman Missal parts are out. I don’t mind chant.
