Hello,

I saw the thread Title and it raised a couple questions in my mind that I have wanted to ask for some time about music in the mass.

Our parish has many wonderful voices and we are fortunate to have musicians as well. However, one of the musicians opted to replace a talented singer with a children’s choir. Now, without going into specific’s I love the sound of children’s voices but feel it is relatively inappropriate for Mass considering these are young children with little or no training. At times it actually detracts from the reverence of the mass.

Are there any guidelines for music being performed in the Mass?

Welcome to the thread!

I don’t think I can really help you if you do not list the specifics. There’s nothing wrong with a children’s choir. Is there something that the children particularly do that distracts from the rest of the Mass, or is it just that you don’t think a children’s choir is appropriate?

Thanks CatholicZ09.

I guess the challenge to me is the choir is comprised of untrained voices, ages 7 to 13. And while we all love the sound of a children’s choir, the music and/or choir should be a compliment to the Mass, and help enhance and endear the reverence.

The issue is also we don’t have a cantor so when one is listening to the Responsorial Psalm done by the choir, since it is not exactly on key or done correctly, it becomes a distraction and takes away from the Mass.

Herein lies the problem.

That is a problem. Like you said, the music should complement the Mass, not the other way around. Is it possible to carry a have a missal with you during Mass to follow along with psalm so that you can get a better understanding of it? I know that if I don’t understand the cantor sometimes when she or he is singing the psalm, I look it up later to get a better understanding of it. That always helps.

Unfortunately, in cases like these, you probably won’t get anyone to budge. I would possibly approach the director in a non-confrontational way saying that it is hard to understand the responsorial psalm since there is not a cantor. Note that the children’s choir sounds beautiful, and that’s not the problem, but the lack of a cantor makes it hard to understand the words of the psalm. The psalm is scripture, and scripture is an important part of the Mass, so it should be heard clearly by everyone.

Hi everyone. I will start posting music selections, but don’t have my music lists with me to do that now. I recently posted a question about the Pentecost sequence and am hoping those of you who post here will respond. I’ve been reading this thread a long time and respect your opinions. Also, you’re polite enough I feel comfortable now to participate. Thank you.

I love “let All Mortal Souls Keep Silence.” I have never heard it sung in the Catholic Church, but I hope to change that in the very near future. :D:D

Please do. It’s a beautiful hymn. 🙂 I’m surprised you have never heard it sung in a Catholic church. It must be regional. I grew up singing it all the time for mass. I hear it a few times a year.
