Hello, this is my first post!

This thread looks like it will be very interesting. I am a fairly new Catholic, and Mass organist (right at one year). So I’ve definitely been on a learning curve. The Church is very small, so music needs are less: perfect for a newcomer.
I use “Today’s Liturgy”, OCP, which has been a huge time saver.

These are my choices for this Sunday:

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Entrance I Sing the Mighty Power of God
Presentation: Where Charity and Love Prevail
Communion: Holy Darkness
Sending Forth: You Are the Healing

I’m in process of doing Music Survey. Has anyone else done this? I have run across some hymns that have either doctrinally confusing lyrics, or seemingly downright heretical lyrics. Has anyone else? For example, Bread of Life (Cooney) says “I myself am the bread of life”.

My technique for Presentation and Communion Hymns is to choose only those Hymns that clearly identify the Eucharist as THE BODY, BLOOD, SOUL AND DIVINITY OF JESUS CHRIST, and no one else. I’ve gathered a short list of songs that do that.

While I don’t use that song , it’s because of the 2nd line, not the first. “I myself” is quoting Jesus.

The next line “you and I” is a misguided attempt at saying we are the body of Christ.

Thank you for your contribution. Lest this deteriorate, we have kept this thread free of such question deliberately, allowing for exchange of ideas and songs, but tiptoeing around debating which songs are good, bad, orthodox or heretical. Each issue would really need its own separate thread.

So far, we have had over three thousand posts (this is the fourth thread) without being closed except for going over the 1000 limit. It is really quite amazing that this has been done on the topic of music!

Oh, and this week:

Glory and Praise to Our God
Amazing Grace
You Satisfy the Hungry Heart
The King of Love My Shepherd Is
They Will Know We are Christians.

Switch Up:
Hail thou Star of Ocean
Holy God, we praise Thy Name
O could it be, that Thee we see?
O Saving Victim (O Salutaris: English, Latin, English, Latin verse pattern)
This is my Father’s World.

Our liturgy committee met yesterday to plan for Advent and Christmas. Lots of good music was picked, even some really old Advent hymns that we haven’t used in years. I just couldn’t believe that we were planning for Christmas again.

For those who think liturgy committees are bad, my liturgy committee is my wife telling me what she thinks I need to do. She is pushing me to teach the kids Panis Angelicus this year. We did Puer Natus last year. I miss Frosty.

:rotfl:

Repeat after me: “When my wife is happy, I am happy.”

The “Panis Angelicus” by Lambillotte is super easy to learn. Go over the words, go over the words, go over the words…repeat… The harmony is simple and lovely when the kids are ready for that.

My little group of mostly third and fourth graders sang mass parts in Latin (Missa di Angelis) and a few Latin hymns (a Marian antiphon and something else I can’t remember :o) and once they got past how to read the words, they did just fine.

You can do it! Now go make your wife happy 👍
