Dedication of the Lateran Basilica -

What music would work well? I normally butchered my way through “The Church is One Foundation” when this day falls during the week, but I don’t like it and won’t use it for a weekend Mass.

As for this weekend:

Nov. 2

Gathering: I Have Loved You
Preparation: You Are Mine
Communion: I Am the Bread of Life
Closing: Blest Are They

How Firm a Foundation
Church of God, Elect and Glorious
All People That on Earth Do Dwell
All are Welcome

Is anyone is curious, I was hired by the Anglicans to play their morning service for All Saints according to the BCP. Here were the selections

Processional: Saints of God, to the tune of St Finbar
Offertory: Saints of God, elect and Glorious to the tune of “Ode to Joy”
The “Children’s Mission”: When the Saints go Marching In
Communion: It is well with my Soul
Recessional: When the Roll is Called up Yonder

It was interesting. The last one was a bit happy clappy, and it was different playing something so upbeat, and to say the least, I found it inappropriate. But that’s the Anglicans.

I didn’t choose the hymns at my parish this week.

I attended a Mass at my former parochial vicar’s new church where he was installed as pastor today, and this is what was sung:

Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones
Come to Me
I Am the Bread of Life
O Lord, I Am Not Worthy (Hadn’t heard this one in a LONG time)
Sing with All the Saints in Glory

I always have low expectations with the music whenever I attend a different parish, so I was pleasantly surprised with the selections! It was a beautiful Mass.

Tomorrow night, my parish is having an All Souls’ Mass where the names of those in the parish who have died this past year are read. It’s such a beautiful liturgy. Does your parish have this tradition? I don’t know if it’s a common practice in most parishes.

It is starting to become popular in other denominations as well. Both my previous and current parish do a Service of Remembrance outside of Mass. Since we usually have up words of 120+ names (most are family members of a parishoner) it tales at least 1 1/2 hours.

This is what was sung at tonight’s Mass for the reading of the names of the deceased:

Sing with All the Saints in Glory
Yes, I Shall Arise
Blest Are They
I Know That My Redeemer Lives (Soper)

Here’s what we did today:

Praise to You, O Christ Our Savior
The Lord Is My Light
Whatsoever You Do
We Are the Light of the World

For next weekend:

The King of Kings, Christ Jesus Reigns
Come, Christians, Join to Sing
Behold the Lamb
All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name

It’s hard to believe that next weekend is the last Sunday of the liturgical year. I love Christ the King Sunday; it’s a good weekend to pick out all of the “rousing” hymns!

Oh! Oh, oh, oh – I LOVE the “Christus Vincit!” We sang it last year (and maybe the year before) for Christ the King, and at the installation mass of the Archbishop in 2012, and at mass at the cathedral the night that Pope Francis was elected. Just absolutely one of my favorites! I’m having hymn envy :rotfl:

This year we have so many new (very young) people who don’t know it, and nobody was up for learning new music this week. One of the men who works with our middle and high school students died suddenly on Thursday, and the choir loft was filled with tears today – some people couldn’t sing at all during mass. It was a very sad solemnity for our confirmation class and the choir today 😦
