All I can say is try going to daily Mass and listening to Lord, You Have Come/Pescador de Hombres" on a regular basis and then on Sundays, funerals and weddings. Believe me, once you have experienced that, you will get my point.

We practiced last night and I had them try Lord, You have come. They sort of liked the tune but I detected a few ‘yawns.’ So we decided to change the prep to an old favorite Joe Mattingly song called ‘Come follow.’ It’s a beautiful piece with words like "along the sea He calls “come follow.” Awake, believe; come follow; come follow.’
We’ve done it for years. Great chords for my 12 string.

So, I guess the pesky Pescador song will just have to wait.

I was looking ahead to next week’s responsorial. It is Psalm 1. I don’t think we have ever done a setting for Ps. 1. JourneySongs does not have one so I looked in Gather. David Haas has one in Gather (#18) that we really like so we are doing that. Check it out if you like major 7th chords. Great 4 part harmony too.

Great chords for my 12 string…

I just bought a new 12-string and used it last week. I had several positive comments. I guess I will continue with it.

Something else I wanted to add was when the new administrator took over the Cathedral, he brought in a Mariachi band. “Pescador” was the only song they played for Holy Communion week in and week out, regardless of the liturgical season.

Yikes! No matter what the song, that’s just tough!
I remember when Pope Paul visited Phoenix back in the late 80’s. He said Mass at ASU stadium for over 50 thousand of us (they covered up all the Sun Devil emblems ). Anyway, they played Eagle’s wings for over a half hour for communion. I couldn’t believe they didn’t have other songs ready. Criminy! Eagle’s wings isn’t even a communion song. I was flabergasted. I know there are amazingly bright liturgists such as Benedictgal around. Why they didn’t have someone like you to plan the liturgy so as to honor the traditions of our Church when its main leader was kind enough to offer Mass. Unbelievable.
Guess I should get over it, huh?

I just bought a new 12-string and used it last week. I had several positive comments. I guess I will continue with it.

The nice thing about a 12 is that you can take the redundant strings off and have a six.

This week at Jolly Ol’ St Nicks…

NOTHING!

except for 21.1 inches of snow.

The structure of our parish is such that we do not have a pastor as such, but a priest from a parish about a mile away is our administrator. The Bishop gave dispensation to all from Sunday Mass obligation, but Father couldn’t cancel Masses. So. Mass was said at his home’ parish, even though it had no power, because the rectory and the church are connected. But he couldn’t get to us because the roads are impassable (even as of this morning!). I am lucky enough to live right next to our church, so I was able to go over and place notices on the doors.

As of this right now, the parking lot is unplowed and there are 6 abandoned cars in the convent parking lot.

That said – sometimes all one can do is sit in silence with the Lord, and let Him sing to you

However, this will not satisfy your Sunday obligation. Nonetheless, if the bishop has dispensed you due to weather, then, there is no problem.

Great news on my parish front! No Pescador de Hombres! I was so happy. I had told the music director that I would pay her to not use the song. Luckily, she did not take me up on the offer. She did not like the song either.

I use all the Alleluia-oriented songs to bid farewell to the Alleluia until the Easter Vigil.

Why not use Alleluia, Sing to Jesus as the Communion song? That was its original puprose. Just because OCP did a horrible hatchet job with the hymn, that does not mean that you can’t get the scrapped verses. These speak to the Eucharist.

Also, instead of Celtic Allelluia, how about “Allelula, Song of Gladness” This is usually played as the recessional on the last Sunday before Lent, as it carries references to the upcoming season.

This is what I would use:

Entrance; All Creatures of Our God and King
Offertory: Father, We Thank Thee Who Has Planted
Communion: Alleluia, Sing to Jesus
Recessional: Alleluia, Song of Gladness

It makes me shiver just reading this! I’m so glad we live in Glendale, Az. It was 70 degrees at Mass time. Beautiful blue sky with puffy white cotton clouds. One of the nicest days we’ve seen in a while. Being raised in NE Ohio I remember those 15+ inch snowfalls. It just can’t get hot enough out here for me to miss that.

6th Sunday in OT then on to Lent.
I’ll post my list in a day or two. All I know is that we are doing a Gather Psalm 1 called Happy are they by David Haas.

What mass settings are you going to use for Lent as well and song choices.

At my church the favorite is Mass of the Angels and Saints which is just horrible in my opinion. Its adds words that shouldn’t be there.

I would like to introduce some chant to the only Mass that I will be assisting at (3 week in Lent). I thought that maybe I would do a Kyrie or the Agnus Dei. Also I was thinking about adding a Communion antiphon. We’ll see, I don’t want to send everyone into shock.

Jublitae Deo is excellent as is Missa d’Angelis (which is the default setting used at the Vatican). David Hurd has an excellent Kyriale which he also uses for the Gospel Acclamation.
