Would it be sinful to listen to a rap song where a lyric says that they “wake up feeling blessed up” ( they they are blessed to be alive). Then tie in that they have a pistol on their dresser and are not afraid to show it.

Rap Music is just **** Music to me… Give me 60’s 70’s & 80’s anytime…
But then, it’s not only Rap that’s ****… this morning (saturday). they show Video hits music , the Girls is skimpy things acting a bit crud and the men acting as if the girls were nothing more than sex objects.
Back to your Question… I doubt it.

Usually I don’t ask myself whether it is a sin to listen to some kind of song, but whether it is worth my time as a Christian. I ask two questions: Does it contribute to my personal holiness? Does it give greater glory to God?

If something, anything, in my life is not getting me to Heaven and it is not glorifying God by my involvement with it, it is useless to me and should be removed from my life. Sinful or not, that is not the question. Anything that fails to meet at least one of these two criteria has no place in my life and is wasting good time and energy that I could be expending in a worthwhile area.

I find most of the time that if it is motivational, inspiring or somehow improving of my own virtue in some way then sure by all means, I go ahead. 😃
I do not see how it is a sin to be inspired to do good things in the world etc. Personally it comes to the meaning of the song, and the kind of music, I find that many of modern music these days consists of “sex, drugs and money” or some kind of pointless thing.

From what you said before it seems that you are watching a music video?
Things to ask yourself is what the pistol symbolic of and the meaning of the song as a whole and not just a couple of lyrics…

Really it comes down to the kind of music it is:shrug:

This.

Plus, as an experiment go to YouTube and listen to some heavy metal. Notice how it makes you feel. Listen to a rap song. Notice how you feel. Then listen to some Beethoven, or Gregorian chant. Notice how you feel. Music is very powerful and without even realizing it, we subscribe to what we hear.

I worked in an office that played pop/rock/rap the entire 8 hour shift. It wasn’t until I got away from that music that I truly realized how listening to that affected not only the way I saw myself, but how I perceived people to be.

So, sinful - probably not. Influential? Definitely.

I can think of several secular songs that are inspirational such as Whitney Houstons’ “One Moment in Time”; “The Reason” by Celene Dion: “What is Life” by George Harrison, but then there are just as many that are just trashy.🤷

Is it bad that all of that stuff makes me feel essentially the same way? :ehh:

It all makes me feel like pacing around my room and outlining a story.

(Assuming it’s good music with good lyrics, if applicable. Bad music, regardless of genre, makes me want to curl up in a ball and weep for humanity.)
