Hi I’ve recently been spending much more time in contemplative prayer, praying the rosary and other various prayers, and I’ve been trying to set up a more prayerful environment and was wondering if any of you have any music or anything you play while you pray.

Obviously it wouldn’t be music with words…or at least not a lot of words, but kind of calming music that would “set the mood” for praying.

Any advice for setting the prayer environment would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, Gregorian chant! Most definitely! You might also want to have a trickling water fountain or something like that too.

I tend to use those CDs that mix nature sounds with light instrumental music.

I have the Gregorian chant CD and although I haven’t used it (yet), that’s an awesome suggestion!! 👍

I listen to the soundtrack CD << Into Great Silence >>…from the movie about life in a Cathusian Monastery… there are prayers ( spoken in french)… chants…the sound of raindrops and other sounds that can be heard at the monastery…and of course the sounds of silence… calming and inspiring…

LHM, you can go to my home page if you like and see if you like the one called “Morning”.

After I saw the movie, I went online to see about the DVD, and the soundtrack was listed. I thought it had to be a joke - what would it be, footsteps? But then I looked at the list of tracks and remembered the material. 🙂

I don’t listen to any music when I pray, for silence is the language of God. I don’t want to miss anything.

We use music during Mass - music can itself be prayer, and is certainly not antithetical to it.

St Augustine - ‘he who sings well prays twice’.

Not music as such, but I have several CDs of environmental sounds…sounds of nature…without music or voices. Most relaxing

For me, there are times for Music, Mass, being one of them and other times, where complete silence is my preference.

I prefer prayers with no music. I’m disappointed there’s not any rosary cds without music and extra voices (with exception to the Rosary Army’s, but I wish there was an alternative with different meditations).

There’s one exception…I do like the Divine Mercy Chaplet in Song by EWTN.

I’m a South Australian and don not possess a credit card…so any details of good CD’s I could purchase, especially with Gregorian Chant would be very much appreciated…but other than that I prefer simply quiet music without lyrics…especially the classical. Prayer times I prefer silence too.

All contributions would be most gratefully accepted:thumbsup: …

Blessings - Pax!..Barb

For the most part I don’t listen to music when I pray. Like Jim I find God in the silence. Silence has such a beautiful symphony all of its own.

However music is a good tool to keep the heart and mind focused on God. Sometimes the silence can seem for some too large and cavernous and the mind can easily drift. Music can and does redirect the soul to God.

Sometimes I do listen to Taize music, I find it very prayerful as it is Scripturally based. I also listen to Celtic Catholic music. I also like the classical scores, Agnus Dei etc. I suppose it is a matter of personal taste. Personally I prefer scores, hymns, music that is traditional in nature I find them much more piercing to the spirit and much more reverant in deepening prayer.

In the Living Prayer of my life.

Out and about today and called in at Big W(Woolworths Variety here) and got 5CD’s or Five Hours of Classical Music - orchestral for $AU9.95…it is like heavenhttp://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/17/17_1_12v.gif - got it on now. I dont know what has happened to my classical CD’s.
I will enquire next term at school as I had been taking them into art class and perhaps I have left them there. I also noted at Big W that they have classical orchestral of the masters that go out for $AU3.95 per CD - bargain!!! I had no idea they were so cheap! I’ll enquire at my Catholic Bookshop re CD’s of celtic music and Gregorian. Their CD’s are over $AU30 tho.:o I have somewhere or other (I suspect at school!) a beautiful CD called “Daughters of the Celtic Moon” which is all orchestral - flute, violin and harpsicord…if you see it, grab it - It’s worth every last single penny! Bethany here is being painted inside soon and I have my eye on some beautiful posters for framing in my Catholic Bookshop (Pauline Media - St. Paul nuns)…some of their posters are truly beautiful…

Blessings all and Peace…Barb:)
