Annie, most of the time I agree with you, but I think that the unseasonably hot RGV sun has done something to you. The music was banal, insipid and a complete embarassment to the Church in America.if you are not willing to volunteer your services, practice for weeks at inconvenient times and stand in the blazing hot sun for hours to sing for the Pope I really don’t think you have anything to criticize. I think the music for all the events, including and especially the Mass in Washington, has been exceptional, delightfully varied, and presented liturgy richly for those participating and for those viewing who may be new to it, and richly appropriate for an American Church whose hallmark is diversity. The vespers was indeed lovely.
I would have to agree with Fr. Neuhaus astute and rather brief assertion that this was a mish-mash of music. It went nowhere, fast. This was a liturgical trainwreck of epic proportions.
The psalm response was horrid and dizzying. Psalm responses are not supposed to full-blown hymns. The cantor sings, the faithful respond. The music shouldn’t over shadow it. Some of the offertory and Communion songs sound more like something we would hear at South Texas Qunce Anos party as opposed to the Mass. In fact, Bienaventurados sounded like the Latin pop hit, El Dolor, or worse, Mariposa by Mana.
What is worse is that OCP has already jumped on the marketing drive and is promoting the fact that their music was featured for the Papal Mass. If you don’t believe me, this is the text from the email I received from them:
OCP welcomes
Pope Benedict XVI
When the pope celebrates Mass in Washington, D.C., OCP will be there. Many of the songs selected for use in these special liturgies are published or administered by OCP, including several Spanish and multilingual settings. OCP is honored to be part of this historic visit.
They are using the Papal Mass as Benedict’s seal of approval for the kind of tripe they throw at us week after week. The only true hymn in that whole stockpile is Amen by Fr. Schiavone.See which OCP songs will be sung
At least those of you going to Yankees Stadium will hear and experience better music.
