There are many bands of whom the majority of songs I like and find amazing, however sometimes the lyrics are deeply disturbing i.e. radiohead. The Rolling stones, whom i thankfully dislike anyway, are more or less satanists. I wonder what other practising Catholics think of this. Should we listen to radiohead, Sugar e.t.c The same goes to sacriligeous films - should we watch them?

Ever think about taking up a new hobby like Scripture reading. Try Proverbs 4:23 .

I feel your pain. I’ll be listening to the radio, then I pay attention to the lyrics. I’m disgruntled, because it really limits my listening oppotunities.

I listen to such music almost exclusively, and I have no problems with it. Some people can listen to it without internalizing the nihilism and darkness, others can’t. I’m able to strengthen my faith listening to such music in the same way that a dark frame brings out the brightness of a picture. For those who are easily disturbed or too deeply internalize the words, however, I don’t think it’s appropriate.

Personally I can’t STAND listening to what passes for Christian music today. Older hymns are all I enjoy, and classical choral or organ pieces. Modern “glory be” folk and “soft-rock” (a contridiction in terms, IMO) makes me feel extremely…uncharitible. I therefore avoid it like the plague.

hmmm - never thought of this until now. A man I dated for 18 mos was an aethiest and his favorite band was Radiohead. When we would drive anywhere, he would pop them on and sing away. But to me, the music was always monotone and dark. I used to refer to is as dead music.

Not that I have any further comment for you - but I have never heard anyone else make a comment on this band. Interesting as I guess I was on target.

I think everyone should listen to Seven Sorrows and support the only Catholic rock band in the world…well ok, maybe they aren’t the only one, but try to find another.

I love the Stones and many classic rock bands. There are few contemporary bands I’m even interested with the exception of The White Stripes.
I don’t know how you come to the conclusion that Mick and the boys are Satanists. Pleeeze.
If you want to hear some really DARK morbid and depressing music - check out some folk music from the revolutionary era, or the western expansion era. Very much centered on death, lonliness, anger, revenge, murder, war, hate, etc. But somehow very appealing because of its reflection of the spirit and the human condition.

dean martin is in every position in my cd changers both in the car and the studio…

deano, sammy, frank, tom jones…
they don’t make them like that anymore.

Have you ever heard of their song dedicated to “His Majesty Satan”?

The Stones and The Beatles were absorbed in the stuff…c.f. E Jones’s book published by Ignatius Press “Dionysus Rising”

I own one of their CDs. (Radiohead)
Radiohead’s music is just awesome - "Everything in its right place…No Surprises, e.t.c.

I think despair is evident in their music but perhaps this is because Life without Christ Jesus is worthless and they can see through the false gods of materialism e.t.c. As Newman said there are only two options…Catholicism or Nihilsm.

Yes I obviously read Scripture daily. The Psalms, Job, Amos and the Gospel of John are real works of beauty. I also don’t follow the fashions…the newest and the coolest e.t.c. but the world is out there and it can pose real moral dilemmas which have to be answered

Exactly I don’t see how one can not feel affected negatively in some way by horrific lyrics. Likewise if a film has pornographic clips it is naturally disturbing as it is offensive and an abuse of the human body. This affects my enjoyment of films as does pointless swearing or blasphemy

I have to agree I only really appreciate Gregorian chant and Latin Liturgy. Much of modern liturgy is embarassing…rock masses, guitars e.t.c, folk music. Its not just conducive to humility and worship. At least in my opinion…

Definately. Incidently, I went to a Novus Ordo Mass in Thailand and it was BEAUTIFUL! No guitar to be heard, just an organ and perhaps a few other quiet instruments. That’s when I realized that the Novus Ordo is perfect the way it is, just that it’s very, very poorly done in America all too often.

Hi, John and others.

I sense that I may be a bit older than some of you, as I have never heard of this band you mention. That being said, I do like to listen to the radio when driving. All too often, however, I find myself having to switch stations because of lyrics I don’t want my children (ages almost 11 and down) to hear and imprint in their heads. I’ve been thinking that, as much as I love music, it is a far better thing not to fill our heads with most of it–at least the top 40 and rock variety. It’s difficult, but I try to just avoid it altogether and either listen to some classical, jazz, news or a book on tape. I consider this a sacrifice, as I am a singer and am married to a musician. Just a thought, but maybe there is something to be gained from simply getting rid of this type of music completely and offering up the silence for a soul who needs something.

Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,
Motherof5

I’ll have to agree with mother of 5 on this one. I have 4 kids… and the junk on radio is not something I want my young impressionable minds to repeat over and over. Somewhere I read that most of us know the words to 20,000 songs. How many of them are uplifting? How many of them go against the teaching of Jesus? Wrong relationships, killing, minimalizing women, glorifying adultery and infidelity, inuendos, meanness, the list goes on. What are you feeding your brain? I really cant imagine that listening to bad lyrics over and over do not somehow infiltrate your daily thinking. How often do we find ourselves singing along or singing to something in our head?? What will it be? Glory to God? or Glory to the other?

Oh yeah, one more thing… this one I tell my girls: Garbage in… garbage swilling around… garbage out. Would Jesus be listening to it with you?
