When I listen to certain music, I can’t help but have impure thoughts about a few members of the band. The music itself actually has very intelligent lyrics and is not littered with questionable content like the mainstream. I find true comfort and enjoyment in it and I feel that it is essential. Is this necessarily wrong, and if so, what should I do?

It is NEVER essential for you to have impure thoughts about ANYBODY. God did not design us or the world that way.

If anything, even something that would be harmless to most people, is causing you to sin against purity then it IS essential for you to avoid it like the plague. We’re talking about the death of your immortal soul here - what is a bit of enjoyment of music compared with that?

Find other music to enjoy that doesn’t have the same risk for you.

Sorry, I think my post may have lead you to believe that I think impure thought is essential. I was talking about the music in that particular sentence.

I know you were saying it was the music which was essential. The music is not essential. In fact what IS essential is for you to AVOID that music since it is an occasion of sin.

LilyM has the correct answer. With all the different forms of music out there, it should not be difficult to find an alternative. Try instrumentals if lyrics bother you.
