The psalm and the gospel acclamation are the only places that a cantor is required. There is no reason to have a cantor elsewhere if you have a choir and they are certainly not used in āotherā churches where people sing with gusto. Besides, if you have to follow in a hymnal whoās looking at the cantor?I totally know what you mean, the psalms are my least favorite part.
Unfortunately, the Vatican II documents indicate that the Psalm is the main role of the cantor, haha.
A few years ago I experienced an entire Triduum a capella with a cantor only for the psalms & alleluias and the congregation sang lustily because we used traditional hymns that they all knew.
