… These heads develop into full-grown worms only in dogs’ tonsils. In humans and in other animals they appear as lesions and abscesses completely different from the tapeworm itself. In animals the size of an abscess may reach that of an apple, while the liver of the infected animal may grow from five to ten times its normal size. In human beings the size of the abscess may reach that of a clenched fist or even the head of an infant; it is filled with yellow fluid weighing from ten to twenty pounds. In the infected human it may cause diverse kinds of inflammations in the lungs, muscles, spleen, kidneys, and brain, and appears in such different forms that specialists, until very recently, had difficulty in recognizing it.
In any case, wherever this inflammation is found, it poses great danger to the health and life of the patient. What is worse is that in spite of our knowledge of its life history, origin, and development, we have not been able to devise a cure for it, except that in some instances these parasites die out, possibly because of antibodies produced in the human body. Unfortunately, cases in which such parasites die without causing damage are rare indeed. Moreover, chemotherapy has failed to produce any benefit, and the usual treatment is surgical removal of the abscessed parts of the body. For all these reasons we should use all possible resources to fight against this dreadful disease and save man from its dangers.
Professor Noeller, through post-mortem dissection of human bodies in Germany, found that the incidence of infection with dogs’ worms is at least one percent. In some places such as Dalmatia, Iceland, southeastern Australia, and Holland, where dogs are used for pulling sleds, the incidence rate of tapeworm among dogs is 12 percent. In Iceland, the number of people who suffer from the inflammation caused by this worm has reached the rate of 43 percent. If we add to this the human suffering, the loss of meat because of infection of cattle, and the permanent danger to human health because of the presence of tapeworms, we cannot be very complacent toward this problem.
Perhaps the best way to combat the problem is to limit the worms to dogs and not let them spread, since in actuality we need to keep some dogs. We should not neglect to treat dogs when necessary by getting rid of the tapeworms in their tonsils and perhaps repeating this process periodically on shepherd dogs and watchdogs.
Man can protect his life and health by keeping a safe distance from dogs. He should not hug them, play with them, or let them come close to children. Children should be taught not to play with dogs or to fondle them. Dogs should not be permitted to lick children’s hands or come to places where they play. Unfortunately, dogs are allowed to roam about everywhere, especially in places where children play, and their bowls are scattered throughout the house. Dogs must have their own separate bowls, and they must not be allowed to lick bowls and plates used by humans. They should not be allowed inside grocery stores, restaurants, or marketplaces. In general, great care must be taken that they do not come in contact with anything which is used by people for eating and drinking.
We already know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be on him) forbade mixing with dogs, and that he warned against their licking plates and against keeping them without necessity. How is it possible that the teachings of an unlettered Arab, Muhammad, should agree with the latest findings of scientific research? Truly, we cannot say anything except to repeat the words of the Qur’an: “Nor does he speak from (his own) desire. It is nothing other than a Revelation sent down.” (An-Najm: 3-4)"

Question:

**Is it permissible for a Muslim to own a dog? Is there any restriction on keeping the dog inside the house? **

Ans:

In his response to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

“A dog can be owned for purposes such as the following:
  1. A trained dog for hunting. Remember in Islam we are only allowed to hunt for food; there is no such thing as hunting for fun, for we are not allowed to kill or torture animals or drive them out of their habitats for the fun of it.
  2. A trained dog as a guide. This would be the case if a person is blind and he/she has no choice but to keep a dog for essential services. In this case, it is permissible for him/her to keep a dog inside the house once it has been trained for service, but it is still recommended that the dog have its own sleeping arrangement.
  3. A dog trained for police duties.
  4. A guard dog to guard houses or property.
  5. A dog used by farmers to shepherd cattle and sheep.

Um, Nathann, it appears that dog tapeworms are not the deadly disease you’ve depicted. From:

drgreene.com/21_205.html

“A dog tapeworm infestation in a child is usually quite mild. It is easy to treat with a medicine such as niclosamide, and is not a cause for great concern (although it is, admittedly, a little gross). The associated dog or cat should also be treated, and flea control measures should be undertaken. Considering the large number of domestic dogs and cats, and the relative commonness of worms in pets, the infestation of children with dog tapeworms is, thankfully, relatively uncommon.”

Also, your article said that, “Saleh noted that pets should be vaccinated annually against the disease from the age of four years.”
This is not correct. Rabies shots should not start at four years. They should start with the batch of shots you give your puppy or kitten at 12 to 16 weeks of age.

Serivce dogs are.
Actually in Europe (at least the parts I’ve been to) dogs are allowed pretty much everywhere whether they’re service dogs or not. Restaurants, department stores ect. Cats too. We ate at a restaurant in Germany where the owners cat was curled up sleeping in a booth. Although I don’t see how any of this relates to Muslim taxi drivers and their aversion to dogs.

I should have specified in the US. I can sort of see his thinking. We ban them from restaurants so a cabbie is within his rights to keep them from his cab.

Service dogs are not banned from restaurants in the US and it is probably illegal because of the laws protecting the disabled to refuse service dogs from cabs.

You can learn a lot from sharing your home with a dog, love, responsibility for being in charge of another living creature who is totally dependent on you but cannot communicate very well with you, tenderness, and you can have great fun too.

I love all animals, its beyond me why any religion should proclaim any animal unclean and consequently despise them., when animals are the most inocent of beings. I understand that jews do not eat pork, but beyond not eating it I do not think they hate the animal the way muslims do. Did you know that Islam says when Jesus returns(the muslim Jesus) the first thing he is going to do is kill all pigs?
Yeah, and God made a big mistake when He created the pig. Right!

ALL animals were created by God and He said they were GOOD.
This includes the pig and dog.

I believe if you place a pig aboard all airlines you will never have another highjacking by Muslims ever.

True. But since I don’t have a pet pig, guess I’ll buy my Lab a seat next time I travel.
Airlines need to start stocking Alpo in the kitchens.

Yes, in some cases, I have seen guide dogs with blind customers in some restaurants, but only in a few.
Actually, when I worked in a restaurant we were told that by law, guide dogs and their owners MUST be allowed in. The same goes for public transportation (buses, trains, etc). I have seen a handful of guidedogs in numerous public facilities in the past few years.

Dog Bites on the Rise
Megan Boger of La Belle, Pa., returned from shopping with her mother and ran into the yard to greet the family pet, a part-cocker mutt named Blaze. Seconds later, her mom, Elena Boger, heard a snap and then shrieks from three-year-old Megan. There was blood all over her face from tooth punctures under an eye and around her mouth, she recalls. Elena and her husband rushed their sobbing child to a local hospital. But the injuries were severe enough that the Bogers were sent to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, where a plastic surgeon stitched the gashes.
Little Megan is far from alone in having been the victim of a dog bite. According to a 1994 survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, some 4.7 million people were bitten by dogs. About 800,000 required medical treatment. Many bites are to children, and most are from family pets or familiar dogs, not strays.
Many bites are treated at home or in a doctor’s office, and as a consequence are often not reported to authorities. Meanwhile, there is no ongoing national system for counting dog bites, says the CDC’s Dr. Jeffrey Sacks. In some locales bites are reported to the police, in others to the animal-control folks or the health department. Some counties don’t collect data at all.
Whatever the exact numbers, medical, veterinary and insurance experts agree: dog bites are on the rise. One reason may be that more people are getting larger, more powerful dogs than in the past. The CDC considers dog bites a serious public-health problem for children. A Pennsylvania study found that 45 percent of children had been bitten. And not only children are at risk. Dog bites are no joke for letter carriers and delivery people.
Dog attacks account for a whopping one-third of all liability claims under renter’s or homeowner’s insurance policies. The Insurance Information Institute says that dog-bite-related medical treatment costs $1 billion a year. Homeowner-liability claims paid about $250 million of that in 1996.
One provider of liability coverage, MetLife Auto & Home, refuses coverage to many homeowners who have dogs with a history of biting or to those who own a breed they believe most prone to bite, including German shepherds, pit bulls, Doberman pinschers, Rottweilers, chows, huskies and Alaskan malamutes. Although any breed can bite, these breeds tend to be responsible for the most bites, the worst bites, and many of the dozen or so dog-bite fatalities every year.

I wonder why dogs are not allowed in the civilised America/Europe in areas where food is served.

Would you like eat in a place where there are roaches/cockroachs/rats? If not why? Are they not living creatures and deserve your respect as equal as dogs/cats? Why such discriminations against these living creatures?

THEY **ARE **ALLOWED. Service dogs are allowed.

Red Herring. Click on this link if you don’ t know what “red herring” means.

Look Sufi, it’s simple. Service dogs are allowed in restaurants, it’s the LAW, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that cabbie gets sued for what he did.
You’re a law enforcement officer in NY, right? You must deal with these kinds of transgressions against the disabled with their service dogs. So you would know these things are illegal… don’t you? Also NY is a big city. I am sure you’ve seen service dogs in restaurants.
