Councillors have been ordered not to eat during town hall meetings while Muslim colleagues fast during the holy month of Ramadan.
All elected members at Left-wing Tower Hamlets Council in East London have been sent an email asking them to follow strict Islamic fasting during September no matter what their faith.
As well as restricting food and drink until after sunset, the authority’s leaders have decided to reduce the number of meetings throughout the month so they do not clash with the requirements of Ramadan.

ARTICLE!!!

What can you say? The Brits need to wake up. Avoid hurting Islamic sensitivity is going too far.

Article says it is during meetings. Not all day. They can eat, they are just being asked not to do it in front of the people who are fasting. Seems reasonable enough. Not too many people are going to be put out by this, Tower Hamlets being fairly Islamic in it’s religious makeup.

Basically I agree with you. Although I don’t see the reason why the non-fasting party must refrain from eating in front of the fasting party, I think as a matter of honoring and loving others, we the non-fasting party should not eat in front of them. We can still eat outside their view anyway.

They certainly shouldn’t eat hamsters.

Thought I should mention that.

Do we as Catholics tell others not to eat in front of us when we’re fasting during Lent??

This is creeping sharia, that’s all it is! Everyone has to be sensitive to the feelings of Muslims while they don’t care who they offend!

If they don’t want to be in a room where other people are eating, they can just go somewhere else, but prohibiting others from eating because Muslims are fasting is just plain ridiculous and should be stopped!

No, they can’t go elsewhere, read the article again. It is during the meetings. Meetings which these Muslims are a part of.

Also, ‘‘the Muslims’’ didn’t tell people not to eat. John Williams (really Islamic name there), the council’s head of democratic services, sent the memo.

The article also says that the meetings usually start at 6.30 pm. Food will be set out after the sun has set. Last night the sun set in London at 8pm. If they can’t go an hour and a half without eating God help them.

Read the article again.

I remember in college Orthodox trying to get accommodations for fasting on Wednesdays and Fridays and during the Major Fasts, in other words a vegan diet. Now if vegans had asked, I’m sure they would have gotten it, but we were told “that’s just a personal matter we can’t deal with.”

Now they are debating it but there might come a time where it will imposed on them not only during meetings, but all day long…

It doesn’t matter! It’s still an imposition. It’s asking non-Muslims to observe rituals that have nothing to do with them.

Nice way to sidestep the fact that so much misinformation was presented. Your second sentence seems to contradict your first, either they are being asked not to eat, or Ramadan is being imposed on them.

England has bigger worries right now than the remote chance of Shari’ah law being instiuted, and this is hardly a sign of it anyway.

I totally agree with Booklover, it is Sharia by the back door and we open it ourselves. Of course they can go elsewhere, out of Europe e.g. - where they belong.
There are Muslims of European extraction too. I am sure Vickie would not agree with your ‘‘go back to where they came from’’ comment either.

Whatever. Islam is the greatest threat to freedom there is, and it must be fought with all our strength, not appeased by politically correct wimps. They can believe whatever they want and practise whatever they want, but leave all others with their particular customs alone. If they want to fast, so be it, but that is no reason for anybody else to change anything in their lives.

Eating during town hall meetings are not a particular custom of non Muslims. Nobody is having to change anything in their lives, many of them probably smoke, smoking is no longer allowed in public buildings, thats a law, got a problem with them not being able to light up in the meeting? This is merely a request. A notice that the food will be served slightly later because of the religious significance of the Ramadan fast.
