Eating during town hall meetings are not a particular custom of non Muslims. Nobody is having to change anything in their lives, many of them probably smoke, smoking is no longer allowed in public buildings, thats a law, got a problem with them not being able to light up in the meeting? This is merely a request. A notice that the food will be served slightly later because of the religious significance of the Ramadan fast.
Yeah, and the next request will be to have their muezzins shout their prayers from a minarett. Or forbid butchers to sell pork. Or being allowed to chop off thieves’ hands. Or have more rights than non-muslims before court, which is all part of their faith and not respecting that could hurt their precious feelings.
Give them a finger and they’ll take a hand. No appeasement, the line must be drawn.

They already have the call to prayer in some areas. They have their own butcher’s and rarely will you see a Muslim shop from a non Muslim butcher. This isn’t appeasement, it is religious tolerance.

I guess, most of you don’t understand the mentality of the Muslims. They will ask you for something until you give it to them. They are very persistent and sometimes, they can be annoying. You have to be firmed with them. Once you give into their demand, you’ll open the door for more demands. Almost anything non-Islamic is offensive to them. Take the piggy bank, Santa Claus, Christmas tree, etc for example. There’s no reciprocal.

FYI. Ramadan is nothing more than reversing the eating cycle. The Muslims"fast" during the day. They’ll spend all night eating. Fact: most Muslims gain weight during Ramadan.

their call to prayer is really, really, really ( x1000 ) annoying
there’s 3 different mosques in a 1 kilometer radius of my home,
they shout at 4 a.m. ( not simultaneously, with a difference of several seconds )
it’s sounds more like they are yelling at each other

here’s one of my many wierd experences living in a muslim majority community adn country
several years back, the council of ulamas ( the unoficial authority on islamic law & practices in indonesia ) issued a fatwa banning muslims not to congratulate non muslims on their religious celebrations ( christmas, waisak, etc. )
so the residents of my small employee housing complex of researchers, suddenly that year, stopped congratulating
except a hindu family and 2 “cool” muslim family who says it just doesn’t feel right
one of my neighbour spread the news for the others follow ( one of the cool ones told us what happened )

The title of this thread should be changed. It is a non Muslim who issued the memo requesting that people wait an hour or so before eating at the meeting.

some want to learn the hard way…we people in the middle east know nothing, they know better about Muslims so let them learn it the hard way…

Not, it is not. Religious tolerance is to let them have their religion and their customs as long as they don’t hurt anybody else. So not fobidding Ramadan is tolerance, not to eat during Ramadan because this might upset someone is appeasement.
I am fed up with all this “respect religious feelings” stuff. Respect must be earned not given away. For hundreds of years muslims (and christians for all that matters but since Vatican II the Catholic stance on those matters has changed for the better, even I might thank your Holy Spirit for that) don’t give rats about religious feelings of other people, insulting, mocking, persecuting and killing them. They neglect religious freedom, but if their faith is criticised or poked a bit of fun at it they get nuts. Ridiculous.
No tolerance for the intolerant.

Fortunately that is not a Christian point of view.

Do you people realise how stupid you are acting. They are being asked, by an Englishman, to wait, just 90 minutes, before eating, so that the meeting may run more smoothly. Tower Hamlets is a Muslim majority area. It is possible that the people serving the food are Muslim. It is likely that the majority of the people in the meeting will not have a problem with this request.

Seriously you guys need to find problems that relate to you, not waste your time dredging through British news, just to complain about poor old Britain being invaded by the Islamic hordes.

You think, this particular example from the article is to insignifcant to debate? You’re right, I agree. But it is only the tip of the iceberg.

Here in Germany you get fined up to 10000€ for having a public dance or a private BBQ on Good Friday. You are fined up to 50000€ for kosher butchering, unless you’re a Jew or a Muslim.
Now, THAT is stupid. No, it is not stupid, it is an insolence. People get extra rights just for believing something, and that is plainly WRONG.

Same rights, same laws for everyone - regardless of race, faith, gender etc., that’s western type democracy. Special rights for special people, that’s primitive history we should have overcome by now. But obviously only in our dreams.

Well thats evident enough by your subtle screen name 😉

Why would a gentile want to open a kosher butchers?

You are ignoring, once again, that it is a request. Not a law.

It doesn’t matter! It’s still an imposition. It’s asking non-Muslims to observe rituals that have nothing to do with them.

Vickie
it is nothing but common courtesy to refreain from eating in front of someone who is fasting.

And requests are answered with courtesy.
That depends on the request. Religious tolerance ends at the own doorstep.
If a religion requires human sacrifices, stoninge of apostates or burning witches, that must not be tolerates. According requests met with … you know.
I will certainly not contemplate whether I could insult a hindu by eating beef, a muslim by eating pork or anything at the wrong time or anything else totally normal, just not to upset some religous geek with strange customs.
Brown shoes along with dark trousers or pink shirts are an insult to my aesthetic sense but I would never request anyone to refrain from wearing them in my presence.
Perhaps you think that is a stupid example. Well, not eating because some foreign god said so, is way stupid to me.
There is no reason to freak out, if others don’t comply with rituals strange to them.

And no reason to freak out if people foreign to you are being considerate of their neighbour’s feelings by waiting a further 90 minutes to eat, perhaps grabbing a quick snack before the meeting instead of eating when they are in a meeting.

Quite right. But as I said, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Muslims in Europe and esp. in the UK are slowly transforming society into their ideal, the Umma. That must be circumvented at all costs even if that means to be discourteous from time to time. Otherwise they might get the idea one day, that killing cartoonists and film-makers or crashing planes into skyscrapers is a proper way of getting their precious religious feelings respected … hey, wait…

Hey…wait…neither of those events happened in the U.K. And there are certain things they are not allowed to do.

They certainly shouldn’t eat hamsters.

Thought I should mention that.
To wrench the thread back to this point: 🙂 Here are the immortal lyrics to “Shine” as performed by the Newsboys:

and try as you may, there isn´t a way
to explain the kind of change
that would make an Eskimo renounce fur
that would make a vegetarian barbecue a hamster
unless you can trace this about-face
to a certain sign…

Chorus
shine
make ´em wonder what you´ve got
make ´em wish that they were not
on the outside looking bored
shine
let it shine before all men
let´em see good works, and then
let ´em glorify the Lord.

I think it would be a courteous thing if the church steeples in the UK would be lowered so as to be no higher than that of the lowest mosque. I also think it would be a good idea for Christians to pay a special tax to be distributed among muslims. Christians should also wear special clothing to identify themselves as such. Non muslims should always move off the sidewalks when muslims are approaching just…you know as an act of courtesy. Hey these ideas are not mine…I borrowed them from islam. 😦
