(ROUEN, France) — In a gesture of solidarity following the gruesome killing of a French priest, Muslims on Sunday attended Catholic Mass in churches and cathedrals across France and Italy.
A few dozen Muslims gathered at the towering Gothic cathedral in Rouen, near Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray where the 85-year-old Rev. Jacques Hamel had his throat slit by two teenage Muslim fanatics on Tuesday.
“We are very moved by the presence of our Muslim friends and I believe it is a courageous act that they did by coming to us,” Dominique Lebrun, the archbishop of Rouen, said after the service.

I hope that all Christians across the world see this gesture as noble and gracious, and true to Islam’s teachings.

Yes.

And that when Muslims say something against the Cross, that is only those who aren’t truly Muslim like the ISIS.

I think it’s pretty awesome that these folks take a stand of solidarity with us in opposition to this attack.

May they see us Catholics at our best and be drawn to Him who makes us that way.

Indeed. It’s a great show of solidarity and hopefully an example for those that have a less charitable attitude.

And that Catholics who’ve been not going for Mass come back to it and go for confession.

I’ve seen a lot of hatred and bile directed at Muslims by Christians in the past 5 months. My high school age daughters have been in tears over some of the vicious things they’ve read on facebook directed at Muslims. Since grade school the Muslim girls were were part of the group that coalesced organically. A group whose parents were not that much into sports, who were low key in kids activities, who we would run into at local museums, nature centers, zoos and local things like music in the park or at the library. Parent who didn’t clothe their kids in the latest trendy clothing with Disney characters be they cartoon or teeny bopper. In high school these girls have been the ones they’ve remained friends with, working on projects in AP and honors classes, socializing in clubs like DECA, Math Team, chess club and NHS.

I’ve talked to my girls long and hard about this, it is an on going conversation that pits the hateful, mocking and dismissive views of distant relatives who are Catholic against the girls they know, girls they hang with, girls who comfort them in trying situations at school. Girls who have sat in my kitchen, family room and in whose eyes I have seen hurt because of what they see on TV and read on the internet.

Fr Hamel’s funeral was today and there were thousands of people present at Rouen Cathedral. A friend and colleague represented the Anglican Church, and he said that many religious traditions were fully present, including Islam.

It was good to have people bear witness to this man’s life (and death) and good to have everyone in one magnificent Cathedral all in prayer together. There is a special grace that happens, I believe, when we come together to pray.
