Does the Catholic Church consider Muslims to be descendants of Abraham as it does Jews? Abraham’s first born was Ishmael, son of Hagar and Muslims believe they are descendants of Abraham just as Jews - and by adoption: Christians. Thus, Muslims believe they have a covenant with God to be His special people, just as Jews do.

Muslims generally see themselves as followers of the God of Abraham. They recognize many, if not all, of the prophets recognized by Jews and Christians. They see things (to my understanding) as a series of covenants between God and his chosen people that we broke (e.g. form Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and finally to Mohammed). They see the current covenant brought by Mohammed as the last and final covenant made by God with us.

I’m not entirely sure about the Catholic Church’s stance, but there is a JPII quote out there about him seeing Muslims and Christians as worshiping the same God.

Sort of. The muslims recognize the prophets of the old testament & call some prophets that we do not, such as Adam. The difference is that they claim that these were muslims and that the people were rejecting of them & distorted their muslim religion into 1st Judaism and the Christianity. Jesus was a muslim and some nefarious Christian went in and scratched out all the references to the coming of mohammad and islams teachings, thats why the koran is not the same as the Bible. The Jews & Christians corrupted their original teachings that they were muslims and the religion of God is islam and only the koran and the muslims are correct in their book because it supposedly was dictated directly from heaven. They believe they are decedents of Abraham but not that it was Issac who was the child God protected but Ishmael, their forefather. Its a little convoluted and for that reason I cannot honestly say whether the Church believes them to be worshiping the same God. I know the muslims believe themselves to be worshiping the same God. 🤷

Here’s the JPII quote I was refering to:

We Christians joyfully recognize the religious values we have in common with Islam. Today I would like to repeat what I said to young Muslims some years ago in Casablanca: “We believe in the same God, the one God, the living God, the God who created the world and brings his creatures to their perfection” (Insegnamenti, VIII/2, [1985], p. 497).

Before Mohammed, the tribe to which he belonged traced their ancestry back to Ishmael. All the Arabian tribes joined Mohammed, thus, descendant by adoption as we are. That’s the theory, anyway. I think the original tribe was probably legit.

From a seminar given by a priest/professor (I forgot his name) from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, Muslims place Jesus as the greatest prophet next to Mohamed. Most of their history of Jesus comes from Gnostic gospels that were listed as apocrypha at the Council of Hippo. They also venerate Mary quite highly as the mother of Jesus, the High Prophet. However, they don’t believe Jesus died on the cross, but was taken down while still alive and bore descendants. The infancy and boyhood narrative of Jesus in the Koran is much more extensive than what we believe is canonical. This is because of the influence of the Gnostic Gospels. From what this professor said, they believe in the same God as we do, but not to the full extent, i.e. the Trinity. I know we pray for those who do not believe in Christ in the Good Friday intercessions which includes Islam, but I’m still not sure if the Church acknowledges them as true descendants of Abraham as we do the Jews. If the Church does, it wouldn’t be on the same level, since we believe the Jews are, in a sense, our “Elder Brothers” in the faith.

I have study middle eastern religions.
  1. Muslims and Jews though they worship the same God, are “BLINDED” because they do not accept the Holy Trinity. (along with some other things but that is another subject)
  2. Muslims DO NOT hold the same place as Jews because Christians and Jews are from Isaac. Christianity is the completion of Judaism. Jews were Gods chosen people according to the Bible. We do not accept Muslims teachings, there for that point of them being chosen is null and void.
  3. Though our Father, Pope Benedict has profound respect for their “DEVOTION”. NO way is he condoning that we do not have to Believe in the Holy Trinity and saying it does not matter if we are Catholic or not. When the HOLY SEE speaks he is speaking to those who know the history and teachings of the church. Could you imagine if we had to have a Catchiest history every time he spoke? So my advice is to brush up on Church teaching and the Bible.
  4. Our Bible does not condone what the Quran/Hadith claim. Our Bible had battles and war to defend our faith and religious persecution. Jesus did not KILL people who did not accept him. That is left for judgment day.
  5. We have to work with the Muslims and build bridges to works together on social issues. That is left for biblically trained Priests/Deacons ect… We need to show them the way of Christ thru our life style. The Bible is the most owned book all over the world but CHRISTIANS are the ones that are read.
  6. We need to pray for them. I hope they all come to know Jesus and know his love. They believe God is a God of Good and evil. We do not accept that teaching of OUR LORD.
I hope I made it easier for you to understand. I am sure you will have a lot of people respond to this post. It is a “hot” topic.

I have 3 brothers who defended the USA in the Middle east. All I can tell you is the Christians of the East DO NOT enjoy the luxuries the Muslims in the West do. My Muslim neighbors told me that they were afraid to come to our Catholic Church because of what the “others” might do. I don’t know what that means. I hope and pray that the way we Catholics lead our lives will help lead them to the Lord.

I feel bad for those who have not had the benefit of the Eucharist…

Remember JESUS himself said: “Jesus answered, and said to them: This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he hath sent.” John 6:29 DRA

Every one therefore that shall confess me before men, I will also confess him before my Father who is in heaven. But he that shall deny me before men, I will also deny him before my Father who is in heaven. Do not think that I came to send peace upon earth: I came not to send peace, but the sword. For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
And as a man’s enemies shall be they of his own household.
He that loveth father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not up his cross, and followeth me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life, shall lose it: and he that shall lose his life for me, shall find it. He that receiveth you, receiveth me: and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me. He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet, shall receive the reward of a prophet: and he that receiveth a just man in the name of a just man, shall receive the reward of a just man. And whosoever shall give to drink to one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, amen I say to you, he shall not lose his reward. Matt 10 32:42

No, the Catholic Church does not teach that the Muslims ar descended from Abraham. The Church teaches that the Muslims acknowledge the one Creator, the God of Abraham.

Certainly they have many misconceptions about Him, but nonetheless are one of the three monotheistic religions that ascribe to the belief in the God of Abraham.

O, of course they don’t hold the same place as Jews as I inferred above. I just wondered if the Church accepted them as descendants of Abraham as they believe they are OR if the Church teaches that they are NOT descendants of Abraham; one or the other. I don’t know the official Church teaching - if there is one or not.

I think that would be a great question for our apologist!! I am interested in the answer too!.👍
