Muslims: What is the reference in quran for Jerusalem?

Muslims claim that after Makka, and madina, Jerusalem is the third most important place for them, because of teh dome of rock.

what is the significance of it and where is Jerusalem mentioned in the quran?

Sura 17: Night Journey
Of Mecca

In the name of the merciful and compassionate God.
1 Celebrated be the praises of Him who took His servant a journey by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Remote Mosque, the precinct of which we have blessed, to show him of our signs! verily, He both hears and looks.

2 And we gave Moses the Book and made it a guidance to the children of Israel: ‘Take ye to no guardian but me.’

3 Seed of those we bore with Noah (in the ark)! verily, he was a thankful servant!

4 And we decreed to the children of Israel in the Book, ‘Ye shall verily do evil in the earth twice, and ye shall rise to a great height (of pride).’

5 And when the threat for the first (sin) of the two came, we sent over them servants of ours, endued with violence, and they searched inside your houses; and it was an accomplished threat. 6 Then we rallied you once more against them, and aided you with wealth and sons, and made you a numerous band. 7 ‘If ye do well, ye will do well to your own souls; and if ye do ill, it is against them!

‘And when the threat for the last came- to harm your faces and to enter the mosque as they entered it the first time, and to destroy what they had got the upper-hand over with utter destruction.’ 8 It may be that thy Lord will have mercy on you;- if ye return we will return, and we have made hell a prison for the misbelievers. 9 Verily, this Koran guides to the straightest path, 10 and gives the glad tidings to the believers who do aright that for them is a great hire; 11 and that for those who believe not in the hereafter, we have prepared a mighty woe.

SO WHERE IS IT? iI tried to google it and there too could not find. so i would like to ask you.

Search for “Al-Quds” as this is the Arabic name for Jerusalem.

you mean alaqsa mosque and solomon’s temple is the same? And its not entire Jerusalem but only the mosque that you are talking about? What does it signify?

Hi, It may be true, but than as a transaltion the name they should use is Jerusalem, but anyway, my question was such, and instead of correcting me or showing the reference, kadaveri just mentioned one chapter which on checking I found no reference at all. And yet she keeps on going on, still not giving any reference, and now she comes with the name of the mosque.

No, they are not the same. Solomon’s Temple was destroyed in 587BC. The Herodian Temple that stood on the same site was destroyed in AD70. The Dome of the Rock which is Muslim, now occupies the temple location.

Al Aqsa and the Dome of the Rock are not the same, though they are only meters apart on the Temple mount.

They’re the same place. The Jews built their Temple upon Masjid Al-Aqsa.

The site itself is what is sacred. We believe it and the Kaaba are sites consecrated by God as centres of His worship since the beginning of time. Jerusalem and Mecca were built around these sites.
 
There is no direct reference for the city or the actually name “Jerusalem” (Arabic:القدس) in Quran, because that exact naming came later on, for the Arabs it was known as (بيت المقدس) (English: The Sacred House), again this name also has no reference in Quran, BUT what is referenced in (Quran 17:1) is “Alaqsa Mosque” which some English Qurans have translated it as “Farthest Mosque”.

However, Jerusalem hosts two mosques for Muslims, “The Dome of the Rock” and “Alaqsa Mosque”, as shown in this photo:

We should also keep in mind when Muhammed claimed that he was ascended to heaven to meet GOD from that mosque, ACTUALLY there was no Islamic mosque in that area because simply Islam had not reached Jerusalem at that time, what actually was there is “**The church of the Blessed Virgin”:
**“Justinian I (527-565) also added to the beauty of the city by many splendid buildings. Of these the most famous was a great basilica dedicated to the Blessed Virgin with a house for pilgrims attached. It stood in the middle of the city, but has now completely disappeared. He also built another great church of the Blessed Virgin at the southern end of the old Temple area (now the Al-aqsa Mosque).”

I am a bit confused cause GEddie says that they are not the same, and you say they are the same. Now going by your say, that means the Solomons temple was actually a mosque and should have been Solomon’s mosque, and that also signifies that Islam and Mohammed came long before Jesus.

So how come the history and all the writings say that mohammed came almost 600 years after Jesus, that must be an error and seems no muslim is tryiing to correct it.

IUnless you can explain in a better way.
 
The farthest mosques in Muhammed’s time was in Saudi Arabia.

The dream of Muhammed was later expounded on after the Arab conquest to make a religious and prophetic claim to Jerusalem— the center of Jerusalem for the Jews and the birthplace of Christianity.

Muhammed had rode by Jerusalem but had no interest in it. His nephew later protested this staking by the Umayyid Muslims, Syrians,…a tactic of theirs to claim land by contriving myths to gain entitlement to the land. So the whole claim to Jerusalem in the Sura was a falsehood.

The time Muhammed had a dream of ascending into heaven, Jerusalem was dominated by the huge St. Mary Major of Justinian Byzantine Catholic church…so in essence you could say that Muhammed rose to heaven next to the Catholic church. The Pre Islamic Persians destroyed part of it. The church’s remaining section was still used by the Christians up to around early 800, but it was fully destroyed by the Muslims soon after.

The nephew also protested building the mosque at the Rock, upset that the mosque would be built on the rock that he incorrectly assumed Abraham used in attempt to sacrifice his son. Abraham was in the wilderness and Jerusalem was already a settlement of people at that time. But atleast Muhammed’s nephew was upset with this fraud and I think this as well shows sincerety of belief in God among the Muslim with integrity.

I said they are the same place. Geddie said Solomon’s Temple and Al-Aqsa Mosque are not the same in that they are different buildings which existed at different times but he agrees with me that they were built on the same site.

The word *masjid *(what the Qur’an calls Solomon’s Temple) doesn’t really mean mosque it means ‘place of prostration’ and refers to any place where God is worshipped, there need not necessarily even be a building there. There’s nothing anachronistic about calling Solomon’s Temple a ‘masjid’.

Dear Kadaveri, Given by your explaination, I am sure if I said that the muslims main synogogue is in Makka, or muslims main church is in makka is it ok? I am sure you will not accept it.

Jews pray in synagogues / temple and Christian pray in Churches. By calling our religious places mosque or majjid, you give a very different meaning to what it is. As you say they were built at the same site, does it mean the mosque was first which was destroyed and Solomon built the temple there or …

So what according to you was the first Alaqsa mosque or the Solomon’s temple?
