"must have" books and sacramentals

So yesterday I was going over in my head several books and sacramentals that it would be good for every practicing Traditional Catholic to have. A list of “must have” or maybe just “good to have” items for a Catholic if you will. Obviously these are not “required” by any authority in the Church, but they are definitely items that have shown to aid the faith of many in the past from what I’ve heard and read in my studies of the faith so far. This is also being done from a more traditional perspective as I mentioned, or someone who prefers the Extraordinary Form and usually attends this Mass. Here is my list so far, what would you add or recommend to the list? 🙂

Holy Bible (Douay-Rheims translation)
Roman Missal (1962)
Baltimore Catechism
Catechism of the Catholic Church (2nd edition)
Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Rosary
Scapular (of any order/spirituality one feels lead to, obviously brown is most common)
Holy Water bottle
standing or wall Crucifix (for home or office)
Miraculous Medal
picture or statue of Our Lady
 
This is a great list.

I would add a good, solid prayer book - preferably one with the major litanies.
(Depending on your edition of the Missal, there may be a Treasury of Prayers that serves this function)
 
You might want to add blessed salt, blessed with the prayer of exorcism, and used around your doors and windows. As long as it remains in the form of salt, it carries the prayer and blessing with it. (Rock salt is best, I think.)
 
As far as sacramentals go, this is one I have at my desk - a blessed St. Benedict’s cross, than hangs from a paper clip taped to the back of my monitor. I’ve recently added one of the most work-appropriate quotes from a saint I’ve ever seen.

How could you forget St Benedict medal? Demons are all around us today.
 
I’m all for the St. Benedict’s medal too. We are blessed (no pun intended) to have a Benedictine monastery. I took a heapload of Benedictine crosses, medals and crucifixes there and had one of the priests pray a blessing (rite of exorcism blessing) on all of the crosses and sacramentals.

I would add a crucifix that you wear as well would be good. Having a holy water font by the door is nice too. When I go to the monastery I get a big water container of water to gather their holy water (It’s in a big fountain type affair as you enter their church). I use that in my font.

hmmm I have the Baronius press missal and I think it does have this, I think.
 
oh yes definitely St. Benedict medal or St. Benedict crucifix

my Rosary has a St. Benedict crucifix on it as well as the medal for the center

my brown scapular also has a St. Benedict medal attached and a crucifix 👍
 
In addition to what is listed above I also carry:
  • Pardon Crucifix
  • Sacred Heart Badge
  • Lives of the Saints (Catholic Book Publishing Company)
  • Manual of Prayers (Midwest Theological Forum) This is the best prayer book I have ever had. It includes prayers in English and Latin, as well as a great wealth of litanies, prayers of the saints, rosary, stations, and modern penance and benidiction.
Personally, in addition to the Traditional Mass on Sunday’s I also attend the Novus Ordo Mass daily. Therefore I would also suggest the
  • “Daily Roman Missal” published by the Midwest Theological Forum.
I believe that it is a good idea to have a Novus Ordo missal even if you don’t regularly attend the Mass; if for no other reason than to bring us understanding of the most popular Catholic Mass.

I agree on the missal, I also from time to time attend a daily Novus Ordo mass during my lunch break from work. Could you link to an example of a sacred heart badge? I have seen medals but I don’t think ever a badge though.

Lives of the Saints is definitely a good one 👍
 
I would also suggest getting the following:

the revised 2011 edition of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal
any (or better yet, every) book written by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI
the revised Daily Roman Missal (which should come out in late October)
 
I do own the Bible of course. I also own an older copy of the Lives of the Saints.

I do have many books about or by St Therese of Lisieux, the Baltimore Catechism (0,1, 2), and a few other saint/Marian related too.

I do have several medals including several of my patron Saint Therese. I also have a few statues and religious pictures in my apartment. I also have several rosaries. I have a crucifix up on my wall too.

1958 New Marian Missal for the EF (Almost identical to the one offered by Baronius Press and $20 cheaper)
1999 New St. Joseph Missal for the OF
Catholic Prayer Book for Army & Navy (Printed in 1917. Family Heirloom. It has lots of daily prayers, the text of the Mass, litanies, indulged prayers, and a ‘Plan of Life’)
The Catechism of the Catholic Church
The Priority of Christ: Toward a Postliberal Catholicism by Fr. Robert Barron

Some books I’ve wanted to get around to reading:

Confessions by St. Augustine
The Seven Story Mountain by Thomas Merton
 
I can’t believe i didn’t see these books on the list:
  1. True Devotion to Mary
  2. The Secret of Mary
  3. The Secret of the Rosary
  4. The Sermons of the Cure d’ars.
  5. Anything by Teresa of Jesua
  6. Introduction to the devout life by St. Francis de Sales
 
Can anyone recommend good books about the lives of:
St. Catherine of Sienna
St. Therese Lisieux
St Augustine
St Anthony of Padua

In fact all the Saints. 😃
