“Confessions of St. Augustine” is the go-to classic of his conversion and spirituality.
I’d also recommend: “Dark Night of the Soul” and “Cloud of Unknowing” by St. John of the Cross, as well as “Interior Castle,” by St. Teresa of Avila.
Personally, I’m a fan of Ignatian spirituality, but would avoid the book entitled “Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola.” It was really written as a guide for spiritual directors giving the Spiritual Exercises, not particularly for someone undertaking the Exercises. There are plenty of online resources about Ignatian spirituality if that is appealing to you; many traditionalists are a little put off by it.

Are there any “New” classics? I don’t mean to step on toes or anything, nor start an argument about who’s spirituality is better, but there are books written by modern authors for people in the modern world.
I carried a little pocket version of “The Way” by St. Josemaria Escriva around with me for a long time. Watching the saint on youtube is an amazing experience.
“In the School of the Holy Spirit” and “Searching for and Maintaining Peace” are two tiny little books by Fr. Jaques Phillipe which I seem to read every year or so.
I don’t know if these are must have resources, but they are on my list of favorites.

Thank you.! Dark Night of the Soul is actually on my list of books to read. I read some parts of it online and thought it was awesome.
I’ll add Confessions of St Augustine as well.
St Teresa of Avila is not one of my favorite Saints, but I don’t know if is permissible to say why, so I won’t.

I suppose you’re allowed to have favorite and not-so-favorite saints. There are a couple I’m not crazy about as people, in other words, I’m sure our personalities would have clashed if we had met in real life. Just go with the charism that appeals to you for starters.

I can second these. I would also like to add The Raccolta, (currently published by Loreto Press); granted, it is a book of indulgenced prayers- which I try to strive for. However, I get a great deal of comfort and consolation from the prayers in and of themselves. The Raccolta is a fantastic book of prayers and litanies and I encourage everyone here to try and pick up a copy.
