In the Catholic wedding service the bride and groom have to reply to the question, “Are you open to life?” What if I do not want to have children? Does not wanting children bar me from marriage?

If you do not want children, you likely do not have a vocation to marriage, because one of the purposes of marriage is to have children. Contrary to popular belief, the purpose of marriage is not to create a BFF and a GFF (BoyFriend Forever and GirlFriend Forever) but is to create a family. And, by the way, “Are you open to life?” is not how the question is phrased in the Catholic rite of marriage. The question is, “Will you accept children lovingly from God, and bring them up according to the law of Christ and his Church?”
