Must I confess all my sins since the priest told me otherwise?

I went to confession for the 1st time in over 20 years a few weeks ago. I went to say confession to a priest in a Parish in another town.

I fell away from the Church as a young adult, but recently accepted Jesus as my savior and now am back to the Faith, very strongly I might add!

I began my confession explaining how I had been away for so long and that 3 years ago I married a man who had previously been divorced, therefore we were not married in the Church. I told him we were in the process of dissolving (via the Pauline Priviledge) his 1st marriage and that he was enrolled in RCIA.

I went on about how I felt so terrible now that I was living in sin BUT asked him if it would be better for us to be living as brother and sister until we could have our marriage blessed in the Church. He suggested NOT to do that, as it wouldn’t be fair to my husband, etc. A long story short, we discussed this at length (1/2 hour or so), and when we were done, he asked me if I would like my blessing now. I said “well shouldn’t I confess all my sins from the past 20 years?” He said that if something was bothering about it I could, but that I could just tell Jesus all my sins and He would forgive me.

So, I didn’t have to tell him any of my past sins… He gave me the blessing of forgiveness. I didn’t have to say an Act of Contrition and I did not get any penace…

I went away feeling good but a little unsure of what just happened. Yes, I have begged God’s forgiveness over the years for my sins and have made many an Act of Contrition, but with this odd confession, am I ok and forgiven for everything?
Do I need to go see another priest and tell him all of my past sins in order to be forgiven?

Right now, my husband and I are living as brother and sister (a mutual agreement I might add!), until our marriage is blessed in the Church. BUT I still have not recieved Jesus in the Eucharist because I am confused.

What do you think and suggest for me?

Thank you so much.

Dear friend,

I am truly sorry that you received such a poor welcome back to the sacraments. You intended to confess all of your sins and you did tell him of some of them (marrying outside the Church, etc.) so the absolution is valid and you may receive Holy Communion. You are correct and he is in error about living as brother and sister until your marriage is blessed by the Church. Even though all your sins are forgiven, you are obliged to mention them the next time you go to Confession as an expression of your contrition and sorrow for having committed them. I encourage you to avoid that priest in the future.

I rejoice with you over the graces you have received. God truly has His hand on you and your husband. Welcome back!

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
