I know this sounds a little strange but, must i kneel out of respect for God? Is there any official stance on this?

If in liturgy (i.e. Mass) you kneel when prescribed.

Outside of liturgy (i.e. devotions or private prayer) you are free to use any posture you desire.

As has been said, private prayer can be done in any posture at all - standing, sitting, sitting on the can, kneeling, standing on your head, doing the splits - it’s all good.

Plus, if you’re doing the splits you can do penance at the same time. 😃

Dittos to the previous posters. 👍

I was once told by a priest that if one wishes to do penance one should kneel, if one wishes to pray one should get comfortable and chat with God.
