Must I restart the rosary if I become distracted for a moment?

Listen to your distractions. They might be telling you something important. Distractions are always part of any effort of prayer. Do not be derailed by them Rather, ride them like waves.

There’s an old saying among Navy Seals “Never fight the ocean. You won’t win.”

I would turn off the TV and thereby remove that potential distraction.
I also have occasion to be distracted while praying the rosary and simply gather my thoughts and continue.

St. Teresa of Avila has a whole lot to say on distractions, or “head noise.” She battled it constantly. Like Padre Pio, if I had to start over each time I have a distraction, I’d never finish a rosary.
I would certainly suggest praying without TV on, in a quiet place, and when you are most focused and mentally relaxed. For me that is early morning.Also, if distractions involve people or situations coming into your mind, you can use the next bead to pray for them.

I find that going for a walk is also a good time to say the rosary. Generally there are fewer distractions.

This may sound odd but sometimes I have the news channel on mute when praying the rosary and offer up the prayers for events going on in the world.

Not odd at all.

In fact, if more Catholics did this, the world would be a better place.

Prayer is powerful.

And as far as devotional prayers of the Holy Roman Church are concerned, the Rosary is clearly the crown jewel of Roman devotions. No other devotional prayer of the Roman Church is as powerful as the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
