Must I say "I AM" instead of "Amen"?

I’m attending a retreat where one of the"shepherds" said to us “sheep” that he prefers to say “I AM” instead of “amen” after receiving the Eucharist because he’s empowered by Jesus. I’m very disturbed. What would you call this and is there any document that refers to this?

Dear MJA,

The way you receive the Eucharist is not subject to what your “shepherd” prefers. It is subject to the prescriptions of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal which requires that “Amen” be the response.

If I were you, I would put a good distance between myself and that retreat house. It sounds looney.
