Must one shower with the Brown Scapular on?

Must one who is enrolled shower with the Brown Scapular on? I have no idea. I assume Carmelites don’t shower with theirs on. What do traditional Catholics do?
 
I’ve been advised to treat it as a vestment so of course take it off during the shower
 
Ew. Well, you should buy another one so you can launder the dirty one and switch them once in a while.
 
You certainly don’t have to shower with it on, but the advise to buy a second so you can switch when it’s time to wash it is worthwhile.

You want to be careful not to cross the line into superstition. The advise you got to treat it as a vestment is ideal. Just think if the Carmelitels would wear their scapular doing (whatever) and you’ve got your answer 👍

I do have a second one to keep them clean. I am a rules kind of person. I won’t fall into superstition; I just wanted to know the rules. 😛 I’ve heard of people swimming and showering with them on and it didn’t sound right to me because I doubted that Carmelites would wear them in those situations. 🙂
 
I don’t think so. You might wear it while swimming, however. My opinion is that it’s a sign of fealty to a Queen.

You will be told that it’s not magic and the origin of the indulgence is not historic. We have not heard yet what the Queen Of Heaven thinks of the terms of the indulgence, however. So …

There are anecdotes about its power. It’s a fine sacramental. Wear it all the time, I say!

Thank you, RogerDeCourcy! I guess I would change scapulars after swimming to clean the chlorine out of it. I do want to wear is often as I am capable. 🙂

She was the one who set down the rules of the indulgence to St. Simon Stock! The promise of the Brown Scapular is that those who wear it at the moment of death will not suffer eternal Hell-fire, as there is always the possibility of dying while bathing, I would certainly recommend wearing one at all times. Perhaps you could get a waterproof scapular, or perhaps a second to wear while showering?

I live 5 miles from the Aylesford Friary, the home of St. Simon Stock. The Carmelite Friars here will tell you to consider it as one considers a vestment.

Now, call me crazy, but I just can’t picture the Friars taking showers with their scapulars on! That would be the hige brown garment over the top of their tunic that goes all the way to their feet front and back.

The idea is it being a reminder of how Our Lady wants you to live you life. Worthy of wearing her mantle.

A brown scapular is a sign of devotion to the blessed mother. If your time comes when taking a shower, then the indulgences probably will still count since the reason for taking it off wasn’t for the purpose of no longer showing devotion, rather to clean oneself.

Good post. We laity need to remember that the “real” scapular is an outside garment like a cloak almost. Yes, Carmelites wear it to garden in and eat dinner and all regular daily duties, but they don’t bathe in it or even sleep in it.
 
I leave it on while showering. Why take it off? It gets cleaned and it doesn’t seem to hurt it any, and if it does I have a spare!

The difference between our scapulars are the Friar’s scapular is size. It’d be impractical to shower in a full-sized scapular. However there’s no issue with our small ones. Why wouldn’t you wear it whilst you shower? I have a spare for just that purpose. It’s a sign of our consecration to Mary. A visual sign. We should remember our devotion at all times and places.
 
Why would you wear it in the shower?
Do you think Our Lady would not be there for you at your judgement if you were to die in the shower without it on?
