Must prove Nun wrong...need help with a few things

The bishop of my Diocese wouldn’t do a thing about the situation. And I don’t even know how far I’m willing to go with this. It seems like every day she says something that contradicts Catholic theology or Doctrine. It’s rather pointless, seeing as it would be Me, a Junior in high school v Her, a nun of the Catholic Church. I need to find out how to counter what she said today (Thursday, Jan 26th).

Why do you think the Bishop won’t do anything??? or your Pastor?

She’s getting a little too far out of hand. She said that the Pope doesn’t have all the authority in the Church. While she did make a good point about the Church being ruled by Scripture and Tradition, she failed to mention that everything the Pope declares as Ex Cathedra has been decided out of interpretation of the Bible and of Tradition.

I don’t know what to do, it’s an uphill battle. No one will listen, no one will care, and it’s rather pointless: like pruning a dead tree, a waste of time and energy.

All you can tell her is that the Catholic Church disagrees with her. It is an uphill battle and sometime I find that to argue with the person in an effort to try and convert them probably hopeless. That said, it is worth pointing out the Church teachings on the issue in front of the whole class in order that they get the real scoop. You, or your parents might also want to invest in a tiny little recorder to document her statements. Sometimes when a bishop is faced with irrefutable evidence he actually might do something. If not, you can always send it to the Papal Nuncio and maybe the Wanderer to get the word out.

Yes, actually, I am. There is absolutely nothing illegal about it. It’s only illegal to tape telephone conversations. If she has no problem saying it, she should have no problem being taped. I’ve checked into this extensively from the ethical and the legal standpoint. This is a public venue and those are open to taping.

I once had a priest come after me when someone else taped a Mass of his. I politely told him that I didn’t do it and asked him why he had a problem with it. He actually told me there were many Church documents prohibiting videotaping Masses. When I asked him to produce them because I didn’t want to disobey a Church teaching he very quickly backed off. These videotapes were burned onto a CD and sent off to Rome. The then Cardinal Ratzinger got word to us that we should tell anyone with trouble in their diocese to employ the same method. He absolutely never mentioned that we shouldn’t tape things and he new quite well many of the clips were taped without permission.

If the school has a policy on not audiotaping classes, this would be one thing. If not, what is the harm?

The Catholic Church is the visible body of Christ here on earth. Like every body, it can have cancer in it. What do you do when you have cancer? You cut it out of course.

That nun is a cancer in the body of Christ. She exists in the same error that the “Great Reformers” like Luther are in. She needs to be cured or cut out!

While I initially felt that your words were chosen poorly, you proved otherwise when you gave a high-five to [name of student] after she said, “Yeah, go Sister, high five!” She is known to be anti-Catholic on many things, and to acknowledge her in such a way is to reaffirm your statement.
And, anyway, how can one presume what God does or doesn’t do without actual evidence in support of such heresies? But more importantly, how can one contradict a statement made by Jesus Christ without any evidence? In fact, disregard the need for evidence; Jesus Christ said it. Jesus Christ is God. God is infallible and perfect. What God says goes, that’s obvious. What you said contradicted what God said. In a way, you put words into God’s mouth, which, of course, is also a sin.
But, also, you said that Martin Luther led us all to the “truth.” What, then, is your definition of “truth”? Your “truth” is not the Truth I know; your truth is not the truth, but rather, misplaced trust in a fallible set of man-made beliefs. Is not Jesus Christ the Way, Truth, and the Life? How is leading people away from Christ’s Church leading them to the truth? Somehow, I don’t see how that’s possible.

And yes, don’t worry, I’m going to be completely cool about this. I try not to get hot-headed when talking about religion, because it ruins my testimony. I don’t know when I’m going to send this to her, but it will be sometime before next Monday.

I would say to use a little less commentary and use more phrases like “I’m under the impression” “could you correct me?” “It concerns me” etc. and keep it short and sweet. You want to give her an out to keep the dialogue going and at the same time, since this will probably be rejected anyway, you’re giving her rope to hang herself (I hope for conversion but this fact is probably closer to what will happen). The one thing I’ve noticed with people who hold these types of views is that they like to talk and they will if you try to keep the outright accusations a little more conceled.

So, in trying to give an example of what I had in mind, *I * would re-write the first bit:​

Dear Sister,

I was listening to your lecture in class the other day and I was a little concerned when Cindy (or whatever her name was) high-fived you. I know her to have some pretty anti-Catholic views so I gave some thought to what you were saying.

I’m under the assumption that you didn’t mean that we don’t have to listen to the Church but I think that’s how Cindy took it. Can you explain what you mean’t when you said “x,y and z?” Again, I know you can’t mean the above because…
blah, blah, blah, blah.

I’ve used this technique before and it’s quite funny that the nicer you try and come across, the nicer they want to appear. It’s almost like they want to win the nice award. Of course, if the correspondence goes on, it will eventually deteriorate but you have some mighty fine letters to show to the bishop. Also, you never know, you might just educate her and maybe she’ll embrace it.

Good luck! Pray really hard to the Holy Spirit. We can all give you advice but he is your best guide.

I think the scripture you are looking for is Jesus giving St. Peter and the Apostles the “Keys to the Kingdom”. Jesus swears that anything Apostolic Successors call upon Him to bind on earth, He will bind in heaven.

Obviously anyone Jesus binds to their sins and refuses to forgive in heaven, will burn in hell. I would ask the dear sister if it would make no difference to her whether or not Jesus binds her to her sins in heaven upon the request of St. Peter Successors.
