Must-read catholic books

Submit any books that you think every Catholic should read.

I think these should be included:

Ray Bradbury - Fahrenheit 451 - Not Catholic, but it’s a good book, and it shines some light on the state of politics today, and where we’re headed, ans how a liberal society cannot stand long.

St. Teresa of Avila - Interior Castle - Excellent book on prayer, especially for newbies.
 
After struggling a bit, with the small print… I’m just finishing up a book by Father Jonathan Morris (Fox News Analyst) titled, “The Promise: God’s Purpose and Plan for When Life Hurts”. I would recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with difficulties. Fr. Morris is very good at speaking in terms which everyone can relate to.

I would also recommend one of my favorite Catholic books of all time… “The Story of a Soul”. The autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux.

As for books every Catholic should read, since this is a Spirituality forum - *The Fulfillment of All Desire *- A guidebook for the journey to God based on the Wisdom of the Saints- Ralph Martin, *In Conversation With God *(7 vols) by Fr Francis Fernandez - a meditation for every day of the year and *Introduction to the Devout Life *(get a good modern translation) St Francis De Sales…
 
Before going out an spending good dollars on books that might not be appropriate for you, pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance.

A book that touched one person, might act as a cure for insomnia for you, if its not going to feed you.

Always pray, and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you.

It’s a book on how to handle the general (and not so general) difficulties of life, yinekka (depression, illness, death of a loved one, discerning vocation, etc.). Fr. Morris’ advice and writing style would be particularly helpful to younger Catholics (that was my impression, anyway). Next time you’re in a bookstore, if they have a copy… you might want to flip through the pages. God bless. 🙂
 
Since OP started on non-Catholic books as well, I think everyone should read 1984 by George Orwell (brilliant discussion of how language can be used to manipulate people by politicians, and how our view of history can be similarly manipulated - not to mention how plain scary it is for ANY one person or group to have too much power and control) and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley (kinda shows where our society is highly likely to lead to if the majority keep up the attitudes they have now).

Yup, these are both excellent. 👍

For Catholic books, I highly recommend the Divine Mercy in My Soul: The Diary of Sister (now Saint) Faustina Kowalska (you can find it in my signature line link) and The Secret Diary of Elisabeth Leseur: The Woman Whose Goodness Changed Her Husband from Atheist to Priest .

If you read these books… the following are also necessary :
Utopia (St Thomas More)
Anthem (Ayn Rand, an atheist)

I loved all these books… Brave New World is really good (but the movie stunk).
 
Ohhh I just thought of another one… but you really have to be solid in your faith to read it… The Q Document by James Hall Roberts

All of the above suggestions are great. I have one: anything by Scott Hahn. His books are the reason we converted to the Catholic Church. I truly think the Holy Spirit guides Hahn’s writing!
