Question from a “newbie” -

Must the Rosary be prayed out loud? Can Mary hear this prayer if we pray it “silently” in our heads?

Thanks!
Tom

No the Rosary doesn’t have to be prayed out loud.

You can say it silently in your heart.

When I was entering the Church, I had the same question. I used to think: wouldn’t such a silent prayer imply that Mary then must have some divine abilities? That she then can read our minds and knows everything - is omniscient like God?
But I came to understand that it doesn’t mean that at all. I believe God is powerful enough to allow even our most silent prayers somehow reach the saints in heaven and be heard by them. It is not because of Mary’s own superior and divine powers, but because of God’s power that our Blessed Mother can hear us.

Is it possible to pray the rosary in silence? I don’t think I could mediate on the mysteries and silently say the Hail Mary’s at the same time. I wish I could… can anyone help?

I’ve been praying the Hail Mary for so long, that it is said without thought. I guess I could describe it as being like shifting a car into gear. I’ve done it so many times, that I can do it unconscieously, while think of something else at the same time.

So it is with mentaly praying the Rosary.

when you find yourself distracted in praying the rosary, or LOTH or other prayer, it is a great help to begin praying aloud, at least while the distractions last, or if you have that feeling when you finish, hey, I don’t even remember praying. usually since I am praying in public as I walk I pray silently, but I do mouth the words because it helps my breathing and forces me to breath deeply. If I am praying in public for a reason, such as before the abortion clinic, of course I pray out loud.

All prayer comes from the heart not the lips.

Though starting with the lips I guess is a good start.

The main thing in all of this is, don’t get stressed over it.

When you become aware that your mind has wandered off to some other place, gently return to the prayer.

You’ll never remove distractions 100% so don’t try to work anxiously at it.

It can be prayed silently, but St. Louis De Montfort reccomended praying it out loud. Of course, praying it silently, would not make any sense if you had a group of people to pray with.

If prayers had to be out loud, how could a mute person or someone who, through injury or surgery, lost the ability to speak, be able to pray? Would that prayer be unable to reach its destination?

I remember once reading that the liturgical prayers of the Church such as the Breviary should be prayed aloud even if you are praying it alone. However, as the Rosary is a private devotion I don’t think you must pray it aloud, although you can if you want to.
