Must the Messiah be a biological descendant of Solomon?

Hello,

I have come across a claim online by a non-believer that the Messiah must be a biological descendant of Solomon, rather than just David.

I know the genealogy Luke gives is of Mary, while the one in the Gospel of Matthew is of Joseph but, this person whom I heard this from is saying that the Messiah has to be descended from King David via Solomon for which he cites 1 Chronicles 22:7-10. So, basically he is saying is that because Mary, whose genealogy is listed in Luke, is not descended from Solomon but from Nathan and that Joseph who was descended from Solomon but, not Christ’s real father that this is allegedly ‘proof’ that Jesus isn’t the Messiah.

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out with this.

Thanks in advance,
Dylan.

Mary’s lineage has absolutely nothing to do with Jesus’ geneaology. It is traced through Jesus, who assumed all parental rights of Jesus, including lineage, when he married Mary.

Also, did this skeptic misinterpret 1 Chronicles 22:7-10? Does the Bible say that the Messiah just has to be of David, through any of his sons, including Nathan? Or does the Messiah have to be a biological descendant of Solomon?

Actually, Solomon’s line of heirs to the throne were cut off by God as declared in the prophets. Yet, David is still promised a man in His family lineage to sit on His throne forever.

Regarding any discrepancy between the curse of Jehochaim, the line of Nathan, and the Christological connection with Solomon, see the quote below from this link:

Second Paragraph on Page

It may be objected that there is no need for two genealogies as Nathan’s line would be sufficient to shew that Christ was of the house and lineage of David Now to this it is answered that from 2 Sam vii 13 17 and 1 Chron xvii 14 we are informed that to Solomon was made the promise that Christ should be his heir whilst from 2 Sam vii 12 Ps Ixxxix 35 36 Acts ii 30 we learn that Christ was to be of David’s seed Hence we see that since Solomon’s family was cut off in Jehoiachim we require both genealogies that of St Matthew to prove that Christ was Solomon’s heir and that of St Luke to prove that he was descended from David
God in His wisdom found a way to honor all of His promises, however contradictory they may have seemed, silence all of the objections, and at the same time be born a man without sin.

Glory to His name! How unsearchable is His wisdom. His ways past finding out.🙂

Thank you very much! 🙂 That answers my question! Would you happen to have anymore information on this subject?

I asked someone else about this and this is what they said:
The Bible says the Messiah would come through Solomon, if Solomon was obedient. It was conditional.
1 Kings/Chronicles 9:
  • "2 That the Lord appeared to him the second time, as he had appeared to him in Gabaon. 3 And the Lord said to him: I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, which thou hast made before me: I have sanctified this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever, and my eyes and my heart shall be there always. 4 And if thou wilt walk before me, as thy father walked, in simplicity of heart, and in uprightness: and wilt do all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my ordinances and my judgments, 5 I will establish the throne of thy kingdom over Israel for ever, as I promised David thy father, saying: There shall not fail a man of thy race upon the throne of Israel. 6 But if you and your children revolting shall turn away from following me, and will not keep my commandments, and my ceremonies, which I have set before you, but will go and worship strange gods, and adore them: 7 I will take away Israel from the face of the land which I have given them; and the temple which I have sanctified to my name, I will cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb, and a byword among all people."
So, the condition for Solomon’s descendant being Messiah was removed, and given to Nathan.
Would this be correct?

So far, from people I have contacted about this issue, I have come across two explanations; that the promise God made that the Messiah would be of Solomon was conditional if Solomon and his sons were obedient to God but, since Solomon wasn’t faithful that promise was revoked (and a similar case mentioned for Jechoniah, some say he repented in Babylon and the curse was lifted because one of his descendants, Zerubbabel, was later blessed by Haggai (2:20–24) and that Joseph passed his genealogy down to Jesus legally so that previous curse wouldn’t matter if it was lifted or if it wasn’t the curse wouldn’t matter because Jesus wasn’t Joseph’s biological son. And the other is that Jesus would be just a qualified to be the Messiah as a biological descendant of Nathan.

So, I think the issue of Jechoniah is resolved but, the issue of the Messiah being a biological of Solomon is still kind of confusing.

Does the Bible say the Messiah has to be just from David? I realize the Bible does teach a father can pass on his tribal line by adoption so, that would make Jesus a legal descendant of Solomon but, going biologically from Mary, who was a descendant of Nathan, would someone from the line of Nathan be just as legitimate for the title of Messiah as someone from the line of Solomon?
