Must the priest pour a drop of water in more than one chalice?

I attended a mass where the Preist forgot to mingle the water and wine He realized this and put a drop into his personal chalice, but none in the “common” ones. I wondered if the precious blood of Christ was confected in the “common” chalices. Can only part of the offering be consecrated if some of the bread/wine is not valid matter?

Dear Nakita,

The reason for pouring a drop of water into the chalice is symbolic and is expressed by the prayer that the deacon or priest says at the same time: “By the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled Himself to share in our humanity.” This symbol is not necessary for the valid consecration of the wine in one chalice, let alone several. The rubrics refer to one chalice only. The symbol is not made more meaningful be being repeated. It is neither required nor appropriate to multiply the symbol with more than one chalice.
