My wife and I discovered yesterday that our 12-year-old daughter has been in what she considers a relationship with another girl her age. She says she thinks she might be gay, as she’s been attracted to girls before but not to boys in the same way. At the same time, it sounds like the other girl has been fairly persistent in trying to get my daughter’s affection. Our daughter has always been shy and hangs around a group of girls, several of whom have been involved in cutting themselves, as we also just learned yesterday.
We really don’t know how to begin helping her. We talked to her about the fact that she’s only 12, that sometimes interest in the opposite sex doesn’t emerge until later, and that we think she’s too young for a romantic relationship anyway. We talked to her a little bit about how this ties into our faith, but this is a little more complicated, as my wife is unsure of her own faith. We are very concerned about this group of friends our daughter has been hanging out with, but we also don’t want her to be completely isolated.
Can you suggest any resources or strategies to help our daughter?
