I had my first reconciliation on Tuesday. Everyone kept telling me how much better I was going to feel. I felt no differant. It felt like one of my regular counselor visits. I don’t know what to do. Any advice, because it sure didn’t feel right. It may have been the situation (a desk in the school gym and having to whisper everything) but I’m not sure.

Don’t worry. The power of the sacraments does not depend upon our feelings. Thank God for that!

Know this: through the sacrament of reconciliation all of your sins were forgiven. Meditate on that in prayer. Thank God for his mercy and goodness. Ask God for peace in your heart commensurate with the forgiveness you have been given.

A desk in a school gym is NOT the proper place for Sacramental Confession! Go to a church that has a Confessinal or at least a Reconciliation room that has a privacy screen.

I’m sorry that certain priests and pastors have no respect for the Sacraments sometimes and thumb their nose at the Canon Law and Rites of the Church.

A desk in the school gym!! No wonder you didn’t ‘feel’ right. But no matter. Feelings are not particularly important. What’s important is that the sacrament works. You’re sins are forgiven. A counselor can’t do that.

In defense of the desk in the gym thing, it’s the all school reconciliation, for those who want it. At school we don’t have any confessionals, or confessional rooms.

I’m in no way qualified to interpret Canon Law, but that sounds like it would reasonably fit under
Can. 964 §3 Except for a just reason, confessions are not to be heard elsewhere than in a confessional.

Have you tried to go to a traditional mass centre - for confession?

Arwen, are you school age? How did you prepare for this important confession? Was it something you were looking forward to? Dreaded? Or both?

Although previous posters have correctly noted that the sacraments do not depend upon our feelings, THIS sacrament can be one of the most emotionally gratifying and cleansing experiences of your life.

Then the Sacrament of Reconcilaition SHOULD NOT take place there. As Canon Law says the proper place for the celebration of the Sacraments is in a church or oratory. Also should be noted that Sacraments (First Holy Communion, Confirmation, etc.) must always take place in the child’s parish church not the school they attend.
