My 5 year old just woke up, rolled over and asked me, “Are Adam and Eve in Heaven?”

I wonder what he was dreaming about?

Anyway, I told him I don’t know.

There is a pious tradition that when Christ opened the gates of Hell (Abraham’s bosom, in this case, not eternal damnation), Adam and Eve were the first released. They are considered Traditional Saints, and the old (pre-sixties) calendar has a day celebrating them.

ExGratia is correct. Adam and Eve are saints, all saints are in Heaven. Thus Adam and Eve are in Heaven. In the a English speaking world we don’t call holy OT figures “saint” so and so, but this isn’t true for other languages. Italian for example does and San Adamo or Santa Eva would be heard. In Venice there is even a Church named for San Moise, Saint Moses.

Thank you both! That is very interesting and good to know. I will be sure to tell him.

Are they saints simply by virtue of being the first man and woman? They weren’t exactly well-behaved at times 😛

No, one cannot achieve heaven by just existing. I think Adam and Eve were well behaved. They paid the consequences for original sin but then go on to follow God’s direction. They went forth and multiplied, even though it would now be painful. They were offered the same salvation all of humanity was in Christ Jesus. They are saints by virtue of saving grace. They are saints by virtue of forgiveness and corrective behavior.

Don’t forget…many saints weren’t well behaved at times! 🙂 Saint Augustine comes to mind…Hoosier Daddy’s summation was spot on!

That is cute!

The above posters already answered the question satisfactorily, so I need not comment further on it. 😛

He is funny too! Before dinner my husband reads a little of the gospel with a brief meditation from a book, then we pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be together before the dinner blessing.

After the short meditation, my 5 year old pipes up and says, “Can I say a small prayer?”
With much excitement and anticipation we said, “Sure!”

He started off his prayer with a very reverent sign of the cross, “In the name of the Father… The Son… and the Holy Spirit… Amen.” and then all in one breath he said, “Bless us o Lord and these thy gifts which we are about to receive from your bounty through Christ our Lord Amen!”

lol
