Why do some albs have hoods? also when can I wear the hood? I am an altar server of a Benedictine school and my alb has a hood on it to mirror the hoods of monks, when can I wear the hood? Can I wear it during mass? when mass is done? or in processions?

The hood of an alb or habit isn’t worn during mass but in certain cases may be worn in procession while outside the chapel, of course this is determined by the congregational guidance for the community at which you serve. The Abbot or Prior would be good people to ask about such things.

I know that in place of the biretta, some religious priests (not servers but priests) wear the hood in procession as they enter the church and process to the sanctuary. I have not seen your alb, but I suspect your hood is largely ornamental.

Probably the same reason as Franciscans and Jesuits…in case they get cold. 😜

Seriously, though, we live in a cush, HVAC society. Albs are still made by the standards of long ago when priests may say Mass in a frigid chapel…or have to “get dressed” in their home because a tiny little chapel had no room for a sacristy and travel to get to the chapel by foot.
