As you probably understood correctly by the title, my entire family are athiests. As my parents age, I sorely fear the day of their death…and I probably contemplate the miseries of Hell more than others.

How in God’s name am I going to deal with this? A protestant friend of mine tried to convince me that they might have accepted Jesus at an earlier time in their life and that they might be saved. Of course I can’t believe that but it would really be a comfort…wouldn’t it!

My parents don’t want a funeral of any sort. My dad is planning to be incinerated at the hospital, with all the other trash.

I realize that I have until the last day of their last breath…what comfort is there for me except that I at least realize that I was able to escape their fate and I have brought my children into the faith!!

Continue to be a living witness to the faith. And pray fervently for them. God Bless you.

In God’s name and embrace. You answered your own question. (But you knew that! :))

My sympathies are with you. It is always stressfull to be so sure of the Faith, and want your loved one’s to be a part of that. You can only hope and pray that sometime before their death, they can be converted, and/or that God shows His mercy on them.

God be with you in this difficult time.

Pray for them. If it looks hopeless ask for St. Jude’s prayers. Live a happy Catholic life yourself and that might move them. But God doesn’t force us to believe in him or love him. So they have to choose to do so. In the end God knows their hearts and all final judgement is up to him. And nothing can keep you from having Masses said for them after their deaths.

If Lillith’s parents do not repent before they pass away then they will go to Hell and no amount of praying for them after they have passed away will get them out of Hell.

While that is true, don’t you think that was a little harsh? And besides that, we’re not talking about praying for them after they die. We’re talking about praying for their conversion while they’re still alive.

Lillith: Do not underestimate the power of prayer and the power of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. YOU KEEP PRAYING!!!

No it is not harsh because sometimes the truth is harsh. And someone did mention about having Masses said for Lillith’s parents after they pass away and having Masses said for them is praying for them, which would be useless if they do not repent before they pass away and wind up in Hell.

You’re right. I missed that comment. Until the time of their death, however, the prayer is never useless, never fruitless.

I don’t think this is harsh, just true. My parents are hard core athiests, They believe in abortion, embrace euthenasia (recent discussions about dear Terri have been heated) encourage, expect sex to happen outside of marriage…just about anything I reject, they believe.

I will keep praying. My mother has experienced one stroke already, and is really unhealthy…

They named me Teresa…there really is something to a name. I am amazed at God’s grace toward me, and am stupified at the fact that I was choosen!

My family was taught to be faithful Catholics by my parents. There are 7of us. Only 4 of us still attend church. I thought that the other 3 had fallen away. Receltly I realized my brother that I am closest to is an athiest. I have been very sad ever since. I do pray for him. I live by example, but I think the prayer is what he needs. My mom prayed for him unceasingly, and when she died I didn’t take over that job of praying for him until just recently. I am asking all the saints for help as well as saying the rosary. I pray every day for him now.

I am so sorry that your mother had to die knowing that her son was athiest. I am sure that she is still praying for him today.

None of my siblings have any belief at all, and you can tell by their lifestyles, and experiences…I on the other hand, am well, and my children, seeds that I have sewn are the proof of my labor and I embrace them for comfort…

My family, going to Hell is sure going to hurt like Hell.😦

Folks, I believe in hell and that people can choose to go there. That is Catholic dogma. But when it comes to judging individuals we cannot know. Only God judges perfectly and we don’t know what the persons last thought was. So the Church has never defined by name any individual as being in hell.

Just don’t stop! There’s another poster here named Paul who said it took 22 years of praying every day to see the final fruits of that prayer. I struggle with praying for some friends who are LDS and my heart aches for them to be Catholic, but every time I start to get discouraged I remember his story and remind myself that no matter how long it takes, I will continue to pray.

Pray for the intercession of St. Monica. She prayed her whole family into believers…and at least one Saint…St. Augustine. Read a story of her life. It is very inspirational. NEVER stop praying for them. I have a similar situation with my brother and his wife. I offer prayers for them during the consecration at every Mass I attend for their hearts to be softened toward God’s will. It is difficult to watch people you love living lives that seem to be leading them into hell. Don’t give up.

God Bless

I’m having the same problem here. I can only hope they will/have convert(ed) in their death beds. nothing I can do except praying. slightly better than Lillith is they think being a Catholic does me good

I love a quote I heard on Catholic radio about a month ago. The person said “I don’t have enough faith to be Atheist”. The possibility that we came to this place in history all by chance is so small it’s a veritable certainty some greater being had to at least set it in motion.

It’s too bad that your family will have to raost in hell. Their flesh will be falling off their bones, they will cry out for mercy but God will turn a deaf ear and say “Sorry you had your chance”. The pain will be so intense they will not be able to bear it but it will NEVER go away EVER. Have you ever touched a hot stove? Remember how that hurt? Imagine that pain times 1000 every second of every day for millions of millions of billions of billions of years never ending. Your family will say “Lord, my daughter said you were a loving, merciful, forgiving father so how could you sentence me to this just because I refused to beleive you?” God will say “I’m sorry but you sent yourself to hell not me…turn up the heat”.

Pretty sick and disgusting how any religion can worship a God like that, a God who commands us to love our enemies yet he in turn will hate his enemies for eternity. Lillith, take heart because the God I worship is the God of the bible who says that he “will have ALL MEN be saved and come into a knowlegde of the truth.” ITim 2:4 Hell is an improperly translated english word that is not even in the original greek and hebrew manuscripts. If your family dies before receiving Jesus, they will have to go before God but they will be saved in the end, the scriptures guarantee it. How could any of us enjoy heavan if we were thinking about our loved ones burning forever? Don’t you ever wonder why you love and care for your parents even though they’re atheists and why God who created them as his own children will NOT care at all about them. Seems like you have more love and mercy, and forgiveness than God almighty doesn’t it? Religion has it all wrong and they continue to blaspheme the loving forgiving merciful nature of God everyday. Please contact me and I will share scriptural truths that will put your mind at ease.

Love in Jesus,
Eddie

You are preaching an old heresy.

**Apocatastasis **

(Gr., apokatastasis; Lat. restitutio in pristinum statum, restoration to the original condition).

A name given in the history of theology to the doctrine which teaches that a time will come when all free creatures will share in the grace of salvation; in a special way, the devils and lost souls.

… the doctrine was formally condemned in the first of the famous anathemas pronounced at the Council of Constantinople in 543: Ei tis ten teratode apokatastasis presbeuei anathema esto [See, also, Justinian, Liber adversus Originem, anathemas 7 and 9.] The doctrine was thenceforth looked on as heterodox by the Church.
