A teacher has to assess the level of understanding the student is at. As a father, I assessed the level of understanding of her religious training. I came down hard, as she herself told me less than a year ago after discussing her relationship, she would never move in together because she believed it was wrong. The previous blogger, is not at a level of understanding Church teaching, acceptance of its authority in moral issues and guidence, etc. that others are at. I was challenging him in his thinking, attitude and approach to the position he is taking (?) In time, upon reflection, he may read his statements again and see where he may be blindsided. Jesus didn’t come to make calm, but cause discord…father against son, mother against daughter, friend against friend…sides will be taken and those in the middle will fall in the divide. Pray for us all.

Now that your friend is single, this part of the conversation may be a little bit easier. I noticed no one has mentioned the fact that your friend uses an IUD. IUDs primarily act as abortifacients. This means that your Catholic friend has not simply been preventing pregnancy, but more likely has been conceiving and aborting children during her fertile phase, which is much worse than using a condom. If your friend is pro-life, then you should definitely bring this up to her. Here is a link describing the IUD from a Catholic perspective:

ewtn.com/library/PROLENC/ENCYC032.HTM

“In summary, every IUD currently or previously manufactured prevents implantation: they are therefore all abortifacients. In other words, these devices insure that the purpose of the womb is perverted completely, to the point where the uterus is as barren and hostile to new life as a desert.”

You can scroll down the the “Methods of IUD function” and the article quotes several sources that IUDs are primarily abortifacients. Also, make sure she knows that BC pills, patches, rings, etc. are also abortifacients, in case she should choose to use one of those as a replacement method of ABC. If she cares about Church teaching on abortion at all, she should pay attention to these details that are generally considered “minor” in our secular society.

May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you, your friend, and your sister.

One of the things I have contemplated on about this issue is how people usually view the Church as a set of thou shall not rules, but, what people fail to see are the big yeses to the dignity and respect for the human person, and to the privilege to be able to stand in the real presence of God as children of the one true God.

Wow, if that was in respnonse to my posting, you really didn’t read it did you? If not, please disregard.

Reflecting on what society has told me is OK? Maybe 20+ years ago. Things change, people change our thoughts on everything changes. Realizing those mistakes, and working to correct them is what it’s all about.

Again, sometimes the “holier than tho” attitude of a lot of folks is, IMO, a bigger tragedy than what many claim to be mortal sin.

In honest assessment of my own struggle to achieve a rewarding relationship, it would be a great temptation to move in with a woman who gave me happiness.

No, I probably will not do so. The search for a life partner is daunting, and as yet, incomplete.

It is lack of opportunity that is my barrier to cohabitation. Maybe I want it, too much.

Who cares if she’s Catholic or not or if he’s Catholic or not? No matter what your religion, living together before marriage is a bad idea. My boyfriend is Catholic and I’m not and we have been dating for two years but we aren’t living together and don’t plan to until we are married. Also, we are in our late 30s. Most folks are actually surprised that we don’t live together because it seems to be the norm these days but it doesn’t make it right.

Aside from the immoral issues of the living arrangments, other things get messed up. For example, money. Do you split it down the middle like roommates or do you share an account like a married couple? I would never share a bank account with someone I’m not married to but how do they figure out financial stuff?

Living together before you are married is way too complicated for all involved no matter what your religion is.
