I went to a Catholic church when I was younger but my parents got a divorce and I had to go live with my mom who was non-Catholic. She made me go to Unity and Christian Science churches. Every other weekend and during summers I would go see my dad and go to a Catholic. . I started taking communion and began understanding how great taking communion was. Then a year and a half ago i moved up permantely up to my dad’s and I go to Mass every Sunday. I still take communion and after i take it I feel refreshed with the holy spirit. This makes me really happy. Sometimes I even feel like jumping up and dancing after I take communion.

My big problem is that I have never had a first communion because I’ve never been in a confirmation class until this year. Is taking communion a sin? Should I start taking RCIA classes?

Were you ever baptized? Are you in confirmation class right now? Have you been going to confession?

I think it would be a good idea to have a talk with your priest though, so you can get into all the details with him, and he can advise you what you might need to do.

You definately need to make sure you understand all the teachings of the Church and that you assent to ALL of them.

I have problems with confession but starting out I think all of us do. I need to open up more during confession.

I’m currently not in class for the summer but I will go back next fall.

I was baptized in a non-denominational church on a military base.

I’ll try to take your advice about talking to my priest. Thanks.

Welcome, I see you are in Missouri, we live there too, SW Missouri, only one Catholic Church in the whole county!

Since you are under 18 I suggest that you simply join the Confirmation class at your parish. I would not suggest RCIA for someone in a parish under 18. Unless the age for Confirmation is 12 and you feel out of place. However you would be a great example and help to the 12 year olds.

As long as you are Baptized and understand what you are receiving in Holy Communion and do so properly I would have no problem with you continuing to receive. Your dad and you should speak with the pastor. Do not broadcast the fact that you were not Baptized in a Catholic Chruch and just started receiving Communion on your own. Let your pastor decide the best course of action. There are several different options.

I agree with Br. Rich SFO.

Definitely talk to the pastor.

I believe Brother’s answer was excellent so I will not add any more advice concerning communion. But I would like to say…
Welcome home to the Catholic faith! I have been reading a couple of your posts and notice that your favorite quote from LOTR is, “I will take the ring to Mordor, though I do not know the way.” I think it is a very suitable quote for you. It sounds like you are yourself on a great journey and are more than willing to take it on though you too “do not know the way.”

I am reminded of Moses. When the Lord chose him to bring the Isrealite people out of Egypt, he did not know the way. He told God, “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either heretofore or since thou hast spoken to thy servant; but I am slow of speech and of tongue,” (Exodus 4:10). And God replies, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him dumb, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak” (Exodus 4:11-12). Moses comes up with an excuse or two to not go but c’mon, when God wants something done, he won’t take excuses.

Clearly, God is calling you. What is your response? You haven’t been instructed in the basics of the faith. Big deal. I’ll bet you find that what you may lack in time spent in the Church you may actually make up in excitement and ferver for the Catholic Church. I often find that the most excited people in my parish are NOT cradle Catholics like myself, but converts or re-verts. Again, welcome home. God is with you on your journey.

I would make sure that you are officially accepted into the Catholic Church before ever receiving Holy Communion.

For one thing, there are matters such as making sure that your Baptism was valid, and you would have to go confession before receiving. I would not dely in speaking with your pastor.
