Why would you have to leave the Church just to worship at a Byzantine Divine Liturgy? The One Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church is a Church made up of 23 rites. There are certainly parishes in the United States under the Eastern Catholic (not Orthodox) jurisdictions which are in full communion with the See of Rome. So one can go celebrate full communion with these communities because they are in full communion with our Holy Father.
I assume he is meant leaving the Latin or Western Church for the Byzantine or other Eastern de juri Church. I don’t think he implied leaving the faith.

I hope so, however, you don’t have to leave the Western Church to accept Holy Communion at an Eastern Church which is in communion with Rome.

Of course you are correct, however, as I stated above and I think that some would agree with me, there is a problem with latins making their parish an Eastern Catholic Church without officially changing to the other Church canonically. I am not talking about visiting but I mean frequenting a rite that is not ones own simply for the sake of liturgy. As I said earlier, liturgy is not a sufficient allowance to transfer rites so ones regular attendance at a Byzantine et al church should have a deeper significance.

I’m sorry! I posted this thread and was not getting email notifications of responses. Ooops.

Our ex-Bishop is now installed in the Buffalo diocese (as Bishop), so I cannot ask him more questions. I’m in Nashville and can you believe, we have been without a Bishop for nearly a year? :crying:

Anyhow, I did speak to yet another priest and he pointed out the words “Guarantee Respect for their Rightful Aspirations” in the Holy Father’s statement:

“To all those Catholic faithful who feel attached to some previous liturgical and disciplinary forms of the Latin tradition, I wish to manifest my will to facilitate their ecclesial communion by means of the necessary measures to guarantee respect for their rightful aspirations.

He went on to say that because this Rite is not dispensed through the diocese, and the Sacrament is valid, I may attend until either one is initiated in the diocese, or until the Sacrament is no longer valid.

I’m not going to beat myself up about this. I have permission to attend at the moment. It’s a beautiful Mass. I also attend the Latin Mass within the diocese.

Meus 🙂

Actually, gang, a validly excommunicated man is no longer a Catholic. To excommunicate is to deprive one of member in the Catholic communion, by definition.

Formal apostasy is another means by which one leaves the Catholic communion.

Meus, your priest is incorrect.

The Holy Father’s intention was to have the Indult widely applied. That having been said, he and his representatives have continually made it clear that we are not to worship in schismatic chapels, despite what we personally feel about how well a particular bishop applies Papal directive.

You do not have permission to attend a Lefebvrist chapel. Neither your bishop, nor the priest in question, has right to give this permission to you. Hence it is null and void.

And schism. Each three is distinct and has levels of seperation with excommunication being an act of the Church (for medicative purposes) while apostacy is an act of the person and schism is a disposition ot authority.
