Good Morning Friends.

Upon suggestion from these boards,
I recently aqquired a few books to help me better understand my religion and to guide me towards faith.

The Holy Bible for the busy mom

The Catechism of The Catholic Church

Light for My Path: Illuminating Selections from Scripture

How should I read/study these books?
Should I read the bible cover to cover? or is it ok to jump around?
And as for the Catechism book, should I read it before, after, or during my bible studies?

Is there ay other suggested reading for someone still learning?

Thanks Friends!!

I am in religious ed, so the catechism is my primary reference tool. I would keep the table of contents hand so as you read other books you can “check the facts”. Chapters one and two of part 1 would help before reading the bible.

Try not to think of the bible as a book. It is a collection of books, so reading it cover to cover would not be particularly helpful. Google ‘bible reading plan catholic’. You will find a large and wide selection of guides to help you get through it.

Remember don’t ever “proof text” passages in the Bible, like the Protestants do. Especially the Evangelicals. Read the ENTIRE story or narrative to get it’s meaning. Not in verse so in so Jesus said. Wrong!!. Good luck!. Read the commentaries of the Church Fathers, on the various books of the Bible. They have way more authority than your modern day happy clappy theologions. Search on the internet for commentaries by St John Chrysostom, he is excellent.

I rekommend “He liked Tuesdays best”. The book speaks about an ordinary day of John Paul II in the Vatican, about what was making him emotional and what was making him laugh, about his conversations with important politicians, about to whom he confided and what he read, about what he really liked to sing and who he invited for holidays.
