Ok here is my brothers story…

My brother while in High School had many Sexual Partners, and that was no secret, he even told me how many he had one time. He also used contraception. Now he got his girl-friend pregnant, which is now his future wife. I suspect they are using contraceptives, becuase I found an empty Condom wrapper in their trash, and he has asked me many times “Why does the church say that it is bad”. I have told him becuse it gets in the way of Gods beautiful gift of sextuallity. His future wife, believes that it is ok also (She used to be Non-Denominational) and wants to know where in the bible does God say condoms are wrong. People I need answers and fast. Where in the Bible does it say that all forms of birth contro are wrong. Oh, and my sister in law doesn’t believe in NFP, because she says that a womans cycle can jump around, so do you have a web-site that has some info in NFP. Thanks

Because I wanted to address the sentence that makes it sound like this whole story is a piece of fiction.

RR, you just need to explain how or why they would be using contraceptives if she had already gotten pregnant? Did she miscarry?

Regardless of that, I think one of the best things you can do is just live a good life and set a good example. You may be one of the only young people they encounter that believes in things like purity and being open to life.

Well it’s NOT a piece of fiction, so thats all that matters.

Ryan, have you checked out the Couple to Couple Leagues website? They have a lot of literature that you can give to your brother. I just got their catalog in the mail yesterday and they have cheap pamphlets that explain church teaching and how NFP works.

They were using contraceptives before she got pregnant. She told me the other day that the doctor said that if her and her husband do have intercourse duirng her pregnancy, that they could use condoms, because you put the babies at risk by not using a condom. I don’t know if using condoms if acceptable in the churches eyes in this case, but i told them that it was best that they did not use them.

No, can you give me the website, and i’ll show it to my older brother.

ccli.org/

If I were you, I’d order some of the pamphlets and give them to your brother yourself. If you just show him the website, chances are he’ll never give it any attention. I think the pamphlets are like .25 a piece.

Good Luck. 😉

I am not sure why on earth their doctor would say they needed to use condoms while she is pregnant. In a normal pregnancy, there is no risk to the baby during intimate marital relations. Unless one of them had an STD? If that is the case, the doctor might be worried about transmission to the baby. In that case, they should abstain until after delivery and recovery and find out what other kind of options they have to protect the uninfected spouse from the virus.

If your sister-in-law was raised in a Bible-alone type church, as I was, then you could point to the story of Onan as reference for why not to use condoms. Some people think Onan was killed by God for masturbation, but the story actually is that he refused to (putting this delicately, it’s a family forum!) complete the marital act with his brother’s wife (Levirate law said that when a man died without heir his brother had to impregnate his wife to raise an heir for the dead husband). Thus, Onan was killed for using contraception, what we call “early withdrawal” or something like that. No it’s not a condom, pe se, but it was intended to have the same effect–thwarting conception.

I highly recommend www.ccli.org also or www.omsoul.com for more information. CCLI is mainly info about Natural Family Planning. One More Soul is about why not to use contraception and how to have a welcoming attitude to fertility and babies in the first place. By the way, your sister-in-law (to be?) is nonsensical in her argument against NFP. The point in learning the NFP method is to determine your body’s particular unique patterns. She might be thinking of the old rhythym method, which was a one size fits all theory (which didn’t work for many women).

As for whether it is a sin to use condoms while pregnant, that’s too much of a conundrum for me. Try the “Ask an apologist” forum if you don’t get a good answer here.

Congratulations on becoming an uncle!

Ryan, you don’t even NEED the Bible for this one. It is a principle derived from an even earlier form of Divine Revelation: Creation and natural law. Here I quote myself from another thread:
Natural law is a source of truth, and one which undergirds Scriptural truth and all theological thinking. Natural law, in its own way, is sacred because it is God-given – not man-made. The arguments against contraception (including non-artificial distortions of the natural human act of intercourse, such as coitus interruptus and mutual masturbation) arise from the natural law governing the essence and dignity of humankind.
In Scripture, we learn that creation is good, and that we are to “be fruitful and multiply.” The scriptural warrant, coupled with the natural law, has been acknowledged throughout the history of Israel and the Church as rendering contraception sinful.
I’m not kidding. It wasn’t until 1930 that ANY Christian body accepted the very limited use of contraception of any kind (the Anglican Communion).

Ryan, this might be great for you (concerning NFP); the billings method ( billings-centre.ab.ca/general/ ). I heard that its rate of success is as high as artificial contraceptives. I know a couple who practice this method of NFP. They’ve been married for long, and not one of their children is unplanned (they don’t use artificial contraceptives).

Oh, and by the way, the problem that your would-be sister-in-law stated is prune in the Rhytm method, not modern NFP.

I would start out by showing your brothers girlfriend where it says fornication is wrong in the Bible. If she doesnt even believe that which is written so plainly she is never going to believe contraception is wrong.

That makes no sense.
Timidity - You’re the one not making sense. Use contraceptives and becoming pregnant are not mutually exclusive. Since there is no 100% effective contraceptive and many people who use contraceptives only use them sporadically, this is common sense. The real question though is why you need to imply the OP is lying. That’s really what makes no sense.

You wanted Biblical references for your Non-Denom SIL2B

Genesis 38: 8 - 10 KJV - And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.

Why did God kill Onan? Because Onan desired to control births. He still wanted to have sex, but he didn’t want a birth to result. He wanted the pleasure, but not the baby.

Those who do that now still suffer death, the spiritual death of mortal sin.

They shouldn’t be having sex in the first place period. I don’t know where in the world any of you got the idea that these people should even be practising NFP. They aren’t married.

They should get married, or stay off each other. What they are doing is a mortal sin with/without condoms.

JP,

The part that didn’t make sense was that the OP stated that they were using contraception while she was ALREADY pregnant. This confused me too. The OP later clarified that this was under doctor’s orders. Not that that makes sense either but it clarifies the first post.

Despite what your brother blabs to you or what you find when you’re snooping around, you need to stick your nose out of it and mind your own business.

Ryan’s trying to help his brother, he came and asked for help from us. We’re now helping, as we should be.

If you have nothing nice to say, then don’t post.
