Hi,

Im in a relationship for more than 3 years, I am a devoted Catholic and my boyfriend is non practicing catholic and in someways because of bad experiences about his ex wife that he married by civil rights and left him without a closure, now he said he would rather not get married. We are perfectly ok but the mere fact that we have different views about commitment. He wants us to raise a family without the sanctity of matrimony. But in my part I like to have blessing and a proper ceremony at the church, in which he doesn’t want too. I am not asking for big wedding ceremony, just a simple wedding with a few people that is close to us. We both love each other but this issue put a big dent in our relationship. Help!

Hi,

If your boyfriend married outside of the Church and his wife left him and he doesn’t believe in marriage, the two of you are not perfectly ok by a long shot! That you are not on the same page about the value of marriage is NOT a mere fact. You, my dear, are in denial BIG TIME! Has it ever occurred to you how impossible it would be to try to bring up your children in the Catholic faith when their father doesn’t even believe in marriage? I don’t care how much you think that you love each other, this matter is more than a dent in your relationship; it is an obliteration of it. There are other fish in the sea. Wake up and let go of this one. He will only bring you heartache. You are in my prayers.
